  • Milwaukee and The Riot Report
    May 23 2024

When Black neighborhoods in scores of American cities erupted in violence during the summer of 1967, President Lyndon Johnson appointed the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders - informally known as the Kerner Commission - to answer three questions: What happened? Why did it happen? And what could be done to prevent it from happening again? The commission's final report, issued in March of 1968, would offer a shockingly unvarnished assessment of American race relations - a verdict so politically explosive that Johnson refused to acknowledge it publicly or even thank the commissioners for their service. Featuring interviews with commission staffers and the last surviving commission member, Senator Fred Harris, The Riot Report explores a pivotal moment in our nation's history and the fraught social dynamics that simultaneously spurred the commission's investigation and doomed its findings to political oblivion. Immediately following the conclusion of the documentary, Milwaukee PBS hosted a virtual discussion on the civil rights struggles in Milwaukee, both from the 1960’s and today.

  • Rhythm Café MKE | Session 2, Vol 32 | Liv Mueller - Little Bit of Pain
    May 23 2024

"Picture this: it's the dead of night, and I find myself wandering through a dimly lit room, the air heavy with creative energy. In the corner, a few of my fellow songwriters are huddled together, strumming a melody that seems to have materialized out of the ether. As I join them, the pieces start to fall into place, and within the span of an hour, we've birthed a song that feels like it's been whispered to us from some unseen muse.

Reflecting on that moment, I can't help but feel like the song is a reflection of our shared human experience—fragile, flawed, yet endlessly resilient. It speaks to the tendencies we all have towards self-sabotage, those moments when we seem to trip ourselves up just as life starts to tip in our favor. It's as if the universe has a way of balancing out our joy with a touch of melancholy, a reminder of our own vulnerability.

So, in essence, our song becomes an exploration of this delicate dance between light and shadow, happiness and sorrow. It's a testament to the beauty found in our imperfections, and a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there's always a glimmer of hope waiting to be discovered."
