  • Dr. Sylvia Mendoza, Dr. Gloria Vásquez Gonzáles and Geremy Landin of the West Side Sound Oral History Project
    Mar 30 2022

Hello again, everyone. Welcome back to Meet. In today’s episode, I sat down with some of the members of the West Side Sound Oral History Project. Made up of a team that includes academics, historians and multiple community perspectives, the project aims to archive a genre of music synonymous with San Antonio.

Dr. Sylvia Mendoza is an assistant professor of Mexican American Studies at UTSA.

Dr. Gloria Vásquez Gonzáles is a lecturer in the Mexican American Studies program at UTSA.

Geremy Landin is a student at St. Mary’s University, a graduate student in the school of public history.

Rooted in the cultural pride of the West Side — but inspired by many genres of music — the project aims to foster a space in which underrepresented voices are heard, documented and captured for the future generation.

  • Meet Dr. Jennifer Beavers & Dr. Thomas Yee, UTSA faculty with the SMT Podcast
    Mar 23 2022

Hi everyone, welcome back to Meet. My name is Mason, and on today’s show, my interview with Dr. Jennifer Beavers and Dr. Thomas Yee, UTSA professors a part of the team behind the SMT Podcast.

The podcast — colloquially referred to as the “SMT-Pod” — was fostered by a graduate student who sought to create a space for scholars in the field of music theory to explain their research, studies and present work in a manner more approachable to the digital age.

Dr. Jennifer Beavers serves as one of the co-chairs for the SMT-Pod, along with Megan Lyons — a Ph.D. candidate and instructor at the University of Connecticut, as well as the creator of the SMT-Pod.

Dr. Thomas Yee serves on the Program Committee for the podcast while also lending his time as composition chair for the SMT-Pod.

As discussed in the episode, there is an immediacy to podcasting and in the case of music theory, a marriage between the new and the old. Through striving for inclusivity and diversity, the team with SMT Podcast is paving the way in the space of music theory existing as an audio publication.

This interview, like my previous one, was also born out of a pitch for The Paisano. You can find a link to the story as well as the SMT Pod website in the show notes for the episode. Thank you for taking the time. Cheers, Mason

  • Meet Alex Ramirez, San Antonio Filmmaker and Educator.
    Nov 9 2021

Hi everyone, welcome to Meet. My name is Mason. And, well, I’ve always wanted to start a podcast. Meet was born out of a pitch for the newspaper, specifically, The Paisano - UTSA’s independent student newspaper. By the way, you should totally check it out! There are some really cool things going on over there.

With this podcast, I see it living in the realm of conversation and a show that crosses disciplines. I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode, I sat down with San Antonio filmmaker and educator, Alex Ramirez. We chatted over zoom on his filmmaking origins, development of his style through the theater, how he works with his actors, as well what inspires him about the cinema of the past and present.I’m still working out the kinks–shaking off the dust–so please forgive me if there are any audio issues present. Below will be the link to the story in The Paisano as well as Alex’s socials and website.
