Keeping What’s Most Important, Most Important

In this episode I briefly address the often, and even well-intentioned focus on becoming like Christ versus being with him. Christlikeness is the fruit or by-product of a life spent with him. As Christ followers, what’s most important is being with him and cultivating our connection to him. The means of our transformation is learning to live in his presence. We need to keep what’s most important, most important.

    Image is Everything

In this episode I briefly explore the positive side of image as it relates to the image of God in man. In particular I focus on the moral aspect of God’s likeness (his righteousness and holiness), the beauty these qualities reveal, and ways these qualities are seen in the person of Jesus when he walked the earth. As followers of Jesus we are called to display this same beauty through our lives.

Scriptures referenced or alluded to are:

    • Genesis 1:26-28
    • John 14:9
    • Psalm 29:2 and 96:9
    • Isaiah 61:10
    • Hebrews 1:3

    Oct 30 2024

In this episode I briefly address the topic of a healthy mind. Drawing from an article from Catherine Beard’s Blissful Mind blog, I share five characteristics she identifies with a healthy mindset. Our mind is the seat of our beliefs, values, perceptions, and perspectives which lend tremendous weight to how we are showing up in the world. A healthy mind is one of our greatest allies for moving toward our potential and purpose in Christ. God has resourced us by His Spirit and His word for the renewing of our mind.

    Oct 23 2024

Humankind was originally created by God with a unique capacity and potential by being made in God’s own image. This original “glory” has been drastically marred and downgraded by sin. Living in a broken and sinful world also wars against this original glory. Glimmers of this original glory are often seen in the deep desires, dreams, and aspirations of the human heart where that image has not been completely stamped out. Though broken, lost, and sinful, eternity has been placed in the heart of every human being (Eccl. 3:11). God, in Christ, is restoring that original glory in those who have placed their trust in Him.

    Oct 16 2024

As followers of Jesus our purpose, our “why” in life is to be seen from the vantage point of God’s bigger story - His eternal purpose. This meta-theme runs through the entirety of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. I believe it is important for us to see our life, the roles we fill and the assignment we have from God from this lofty vantage point. We are called to serve a much larger purpose that extends beyond ourselves.

The quote I read by Dallas Willard was from his book, Life Without Lack.

    The Value of Simplicity

In this episode I briefly discuss the importance of simplicity - the practice of reducing our lives down to what’s most important, its impact on our lives and particularly on our devotion to Christ.

The scriptures I refer to are as follows:

    • 2 Corinthians 11:3

    • Luke 10:41

A.W. Tozer quote is from his book, The Pursuit of God, chapter 1, Following Hard After God.

The Lenses Through Which We See

In this episode I briefly examine the role our developed beliefs and values play in shaping the way we see and show up in life. When we come to Christ, this “worldview” is to undergo a renewing process resulting in transformation that produces more light and life in us and through us.

The scriptures I refer to are as follows:

    • Matthew 6:22-23

    • John 3:3

    • 2 Corinthians 4:6

    • Ephesians 1:17-18; 4:23-24

    • Romans 12:2

    The Search for Significance

In this episode I offer up my perspective on the foundational source for significance. Significance is an authentic need every human shares. How this need is designed to be met at the most fundamental level is my focus as I briefly discuss common means significance is realized over and against what I see to be the primary source for our significance.

Here are some scriptures I have drawn from for my four "truth statements":

    Statement #1: Genesis 1:26-27; 2:7; Psalms 8:3-6; 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5; Job 33:4; Acts 17:26-28 Statement #2: Genesis 1:26-27; Psalms 8:3-6; Jeremiah 1:5; Ephesians 2:10; Romans 8:28-30; 1 Peter 4:10; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Statement #3: Genesis 3:1-24; Romans 3:23; 5:12-21; 6:23; John 3:16-18; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16; 1 Peter 1:8-9 Statement #4: Romans 5:28; 1 John 3:1; Ephesians 1:4-6; Titus 3:4-7

Some listening to this episode may find themselves being triggered negatively or deeply troubled by my first “truth” statement about our origin due to personally experiencing or knowing someone with a severe birth defect, deformity, or mental handicap developed in the womb or caused by the birth process. If that is you I have the deepest compassion. I understand how that kind of experience can raise the question of how these outcomes could be the product of a wise, loving, and powerful Creator. I did not have time in this episode to address the age-old question of how a good God could allow suffering. I will simply say for now that these tragic situations do not reflect on the character or nature of God but rather on the nature of the fallen, imperfect world in which we live. Even in situations that do not reflect God’s good and perfect will in this world, God can and does leverage these things for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose. See Romans 8:18-39.
