Body Cam Footage, Testimony in Third Day of Kennesaw Fatal DUI Trial

In the trial of Jerome “Jerry” Cox, accused of fatally hitting 17-year-old Olivia Pugh while allegedly driving drunk, testimony continued with police body camera footage shown to jurors. The footage captured the aftermath of the crash, including Pugh being loaded into an ambulance. Cox, 69, has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and DUI charges. Testimonies included those from responding officers, passengers in Cox's car, and a bystander. Officer Steven Oney testified about smelling alcohol on Cox, who admitted to drinking. The defense questioned the reliability of the officers' testimonies and the handling of evidence. Disputes arose over whether Pugh was in a crosswalk when struck. The defense also attempted to introduce evidence about post-crash safety improvements, which was disallowed. Witnesses from a party Cox attended earlier testified about his drinking, with none believing he was drunk. The trial is set to continue, with a potential break for Thanksgiving.

  • In Split Vote, Cobb Denies Student Housing Tower
    Nov 20 2024

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Monday, November 20th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

In Split Vote, Cobb Denies Student Housing Tower

The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 to deny Landmark Properties' proposal for a five-story student housing building near Kennesaw State University. The project, named The Standard, was to include 191 units and 643 bedrooms. Despite reducing the number of beds from 761 to 643 to address density concerns, the proposal faced opposition due to potential impacts on traffic, property values, and increased density. Chair Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Monique Sheffield opposed the denial, citing the need for student housing and the university's contribution to the community. Concerns were raised about the lack of student and parent voices in discussions, and the potential for increased crime was debated. The project was seen as a solution to the housing shortage for students, but ultimately, the board decided the location was unsuitable. Commissioner Jerica Richardson led the motion to deny, emphasizing unresolved issues related to property value and traffic.

STORY 2: Mableton Appoints First-Ever Ethics Board Members The Mableton City Council has appointed seven residents to the city's first Ethics Commission, following the adoption of the Mableton Ethics Ordinance in April. This board allows citizens to file ethics complaints against city officials, who can then respond before the board makes recommendations to the City Council. Members are appointed from each district, with Joel Cope selected by the mayor. Councilmember Debora Herndon praised the volunteers for their commitment, noting the unpaid nature of the role. Mayor Owens highlighted the importance of planning for future growth, as Mableton's population is expected to increase significantly by 2050. Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson expressed relief at the case's resolution. The Runions, known for their charitable work through Forever Grateful Ministries, were remembered for their community contributions. STORY 5: State launches website for new school vouchers program Georgia is preparing for a private-school vouchers program by launching mygeorgiapromise.org, detailing the Georgia Promise Scholarship. This initiative offers up to $6,500 annually for eligible K-12 students in lower-performing schools for private tuition and related expenses. The program, set to launch in July 2025, targets students in the bottom 25% of public schools or rising kindergarteners, with residency requirements. The legislation, passed by Republicans, caps spending at 1% of the state's Quality Basic Education fund and limits eligibility to families earning up to $120,000 annually. • Cobb Schools Super Tells Safety Plan Critics to 'Take a Break'
    Nov 15 2024

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, November 15th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cobb Schools Super Tells Safety Plan Critics to 'Take a Break'

Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale urged critics of the district's safety plan to "take a break" from political rhetoric following the recent election, which maintained a Republican majority on the school board. Ragsdale highlighted the board's continued support for the district's vision and safety measures, including a controversial partnership with a private security firm, Servius Group, to monitor students using military intelligence tactics. This initiative, prompted by recent school shootings, aims to address digital threats and safety concerns. Critics, including state Rep. David Wilkerson, have raised concerns about potential profiling and lack of transparency. Ragsdale defended the plan, emphasizing its necessity for evolving safety strategies and denying allegations of profiling. Despite some board members' calls for more transparency, Ragsdale maintained that disclosing detailed safety measures could compromise student safety. The district continues to invest in various safety technologies and personnel to ensure a secure educational environment.
