  • Space Debris
    Oct 22 2024

In this episode of In-Orbit, we're discussing space debris and the challenges it presents to the space sector.

There are many layers to consider when talking about space debris, including where it comes from, how it impacts future space missions and satellites, as well as clean up technologies and legal implications. Do we need regulations in place to ensure space debris doesn’t affect our ability to explore space in the future?

Our host, Dallas Campbell, is joined by Gary Cannon, Space Segment Lead at Satellite Applications Catapult, Pat Mathewson, Head of Business Strategy and Analysis at Astroscale, and Valentin Valhondo, Program Manager at ClearSpace.

  • Carbon Accounting
    Oct 8 2024

In this episode, we’ll be delving into the Carbon Accounting Project, led by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Carbon accounting is monitoring and measuring any emissions produced by an organisation, whether that be onsite, due to commuting or business travel, or through supply chain processes.

The Carbon Accounting Project is focusing on the manufacturing industry, with a goal to streamline the overly complex landscape of tools, methods, and regulation of carbon accounting – positioning the UK as the place for green manufacturing.

Our host, Dallas Campbell, is joined by Russ Hall, Lead for Reduction of Industrial Emissions and Net Zero at High Value Manufacturing Catapult, and Amy Peace, Innovation Lead for Circular Economy at Innovate UK.

  • Decoding Satellite Antenna Testing (Re-Release)
    Sep 24 2024

We’re taking another short break from our new episodes and revisiting an old favourite. Last autumn, we had the privilege to sit down with a wonderful panel of experts to explore the importance of satellite antenna testing.

Antennas are the unsung heroes of space missions, enabling vital communication and data transmission between spacecraft and ground stations. However, ensuring their reliability and performance in the harsh conditions of space is no easy feat. That's where satellite antenna testing comes into play, where rigorous evaluation and experimentation are conducted to guarantee their functionality, durability, and efficiency.

Our host Dallas Campbell is joined in the studio by Evangelos Mellios and Harvinder Nagi from the Satellite Applications Catapult, and Miro Blicharz from Helix Geospace and joining remotely, Martyn Lees from Spire.

We hope you enjoy catching up on this fantastic discussion and we’ll see you in two weeks for the last three episodes of the series!

  • Digital Twins (Re-Release)
    Aug 27 2024

Today, we’re taking a short break from our new episodes and revisiting an old favourite. Back in May of 2023 we sat down with a fantastic panel of experts to discuss the concept of Digital Twins.

A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a real-world physical counterpart, they use sophisticated data models to accurately simulate changes and problems, using the virtual environment to test and monitor potential scenarios without ever altering the physical counterpart - but the system is reliant on data and can only be as good as the data it is provided with. One potential source of information is Earth Observation data collected from space.

Our host Dallas Campbell is joined in the studio by Mark Hennen from the Satellite Applications Catapult and Simon Evans from Arup, and remotely by Peter Bauer from ECMRWF.

We hope you enjoy catching up on this fantastic discussion and we’ll see you in two weeks with a brand new episode.
