IN CRAVINGS WE TRUST

By: Sara Kline
  • Summary

  • This podcast documents how food is part of my life. I live each day by the three most important meals of the day, with the occasional snack-and-drink splurge in between. Food is my way to explore new countries, revisit old memories, and think through my thoughts. Most importantly, at the end of each bite, food makes me happy.

  • Amy Russell of Truxton Inn, PART 1 - EP 4
    Apr 19 2023

Amy Russell has been my literal spirit guide since the early days of the pandemic, when we would swap cocktail recipes over Zoom and leave homemade simple syrup bottles on each other’s porch. Since first meeting at the now-closed Kitty O’Sheas in DC’s Tenleytown, I’ve followed Amy across the city to Truxton Inn, where Amy wins me over with pickle back plates, rum-based espresso martinis, and anything else else she just knows my heart will crave after a long work day.

  • PJ and Cortland of Fat Pete's, PART 1 - EP 3
    Apr 5 2023

In the past year, I have become a regular at Fat Pete’s Barbecue in DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood, and I blame PJ and Cortland for this weekly urge. If Fat Pete’s was the Land of Misfit Toys, PJ would be the Santa filled with curse words and endless whiskey knowledge and Cortland would be PJ’s top elf. Their weirdness is endless and their love for their patrons is infectious. Let’s face it: I’ve found love in the weirdest place.

Hey everybody! I’m Sara and I am a food enthusiast who goes wherever her cravings take her, from searching for the perfect taco to enjoying a happy hour Modelo.

My earliest food memory is sitting on a wooden living room floor and shoving leftover rice from a bowl into my mouth as my Lola simmered chicken in soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic. Ever since 4-year-old me enjoyed the smells and tastes of my Lola’s chicken adobo and rice, I’ve been searching for culinary nirvana: from Tommy’s chili cheeseburgers in East LA to garlic butter naan at a Northern Virginia bistro. No, not naan bread - it’s just NAAN.

My cravings have brought me around the world and back again, and they continue to surprise me. Who knew that red ant eggs in Thailand would bring my taste buds such joy?! So buttery, so tangy… Seriously, y’all haven’t lived until you’ve had these.

I believe that our cravings are what make us unique and what shapes the awesomeness of any place that we live, breathe, and feast in. On In Cravings We Trust, we will explore what people crave, the stories behind them, and how our cravings represent who we are. Please, PLEASE join me on my mouth-watering exploration of how we satisfy our cravings through our mind, soul, and stomach!

  • Dylan Curtis of Purple Patch, PART 1 - EP 2
    Mar 22 2023

Whether he likes it or not, Dylan is a community leader behind the bar of any neighborhood he serves in. Don’t let the Grumpy Pants persona fool you: he’s one of the most considerate people I’ve been served a shot of Fernet by since our days together at Northwest DC’s Kitty O’Sheas (R.I.P.). Since then, Dylan has found a home at Purple Patch, where he and his service industry family have introduced me to the wonderful world of Filipino-inspired cocktails and all things ube and pork belly.
