"Forgiveness is not mandatory for healing," is the bold statement that my guest, Julie Keon, starts with in this episode. She has come to this point of view as a result of personal trauma as well as from parenting a medically fragile daughter and loads of professional experience. Julie is a social worker who specializes in end-of-life ceremonies and grief counselling (see website link below).
From her perspective, choosing to NOT forgive can be an act of self-empowerment rather than a gesture infused with anger. And with this reclaimed power comes a greater sense of agency and control which can offset the feeling of victimization that is often felt when we've been betrayed, harmed or otherwise wronged.
But this is a tough choice to make in a society where the dogma strongly suggests that we are not evolved or that we are stuck in the past or will not heal until - unless - we forgive.
So, if you have ever felt pressured to forgive or guilty for not forgiving, this episode might be the beacon that guides you through these emotions to a place where you are free to make the choice that best supports you.
❓NEW!!! SELF-COACHING QUESTIONS❓
Coaching can be an empowering and effective way to let go of relationships that are toxic, to become your own best ally, and to set yourself up to live the life you have been envisioning for so long.
To get a taste of coaching, I have decided to wrap up each episode with a few coaching questions inspired by my guests and their stories of forgiveness. You can pick and choose which questions feel most relevant and write your answers in a journal. Studies have proven that our physical, mental, and emotional well-being is improved through expressive writing so, go ahead, and indulge! It's better than FREE, it's PRICELESS!💖
