  • HOW TO WORK IN THEATRE
    Jun 28 2022

Sylvia went to the theatre with the youth service to see The Lion King and wondered what happened behind the scenes.  She did not want to act but wanted to be part of the production.

Brought up in the London Borough of Brent, Sylvia lots of out of school activities but still managed to gain A-Levels.  She played the saxophone, piano and samba music growing up.  Sylvia was part of Brent Youth Matters 2, the first youth forum in Brent and got involved in giving small grants to youth projects in the borough as a Grantmaker.  She was able to go on a trip to Ghana and explore the slave trade there.

Sylvia trained to become a deputy stage manager and has worked all over the country and abroad.  Recently she has set up a film and theatre production company, BACKSTAGE NICHE and is keen to promote diversity in that area.  There are so many roles in theatre that you might be good at, besides acting.  For instance: lighting, sound, costume and dressing, stage management, set designer, builder, video and audio-visual designers, projection, automation and being a fly person.

Sylvia states that it is essential to connect with people and build networks.  It is also good to follow your dreams at an early age too.
