Throughout his traumatic childhood of abandonment and cruelty, Steven Spellman knew there was something else to live for, some better life. As a young adult, his life was a contrast:  selling marijuana, doing crime to put himself through college. As it spiraled downward, he just wanted to escape what he called a "life worse than death."

He was shot during a robbery attempt at 19. As he lay dying, he received Jesus, but asked to not live. Isn't it like God to have other plans? He recovered.
