  • Navajo Beef Program: Elevating Small Producers
    Jul 11 2022
Over the course of the last fifteen years, the Padre Mesa Demonstration Ranch has bloomed on the high desert of Northern Arizona under the leadership of Bill Inman and his dedicated team of Navajo rangeland managers that work on the ranch. Padre Mesa’s best practices for range management, herd health and access to markets is a source of pride to the Navajo families that were forcibly relocated as a result of the Navajo Hopi Land Settlement Act of 1974. If Bill is the head and leader of the ranch. Kimberly Yazzie is the face, heart and soul of NAB. Relocated as a small child, Yazzie was key to bringing community members to the table at chapter houses and then later joined forces with Labatt Company to market their beef. The two have elevated the local community, as well as that of other beef producers from Native American tribes in the southwest. Through education, cooperation and a shared vision, they have created a beef label that is recognized for being superior, consistent and highly sought after.

  • 1003 The Enemy of my Enemy is My Friend: Allies and Extremists
    Mar 9 2022
Our guest Heidi Crosky of the Virginia Animal Owners Alliance will talk about the grass roots group's efforts to protect animal ownership in her state and why everyone else in the country should pay attention. Like it or not, agriculture producers of animals and animal products realize they are always being scrutinized by animal activists and extremists. People that don't take the time to understand the industry or individual operations. Zoos are no exception, neither are pet breeders. In the Commonwealth of Virginia there is a quiet war being waged against all types of animal owners - including pet owners and folks may be a little surprised who is on the other side of the battle axe. While there will sadly be bad actors in any area of life, the vast majority of farmers, ranchers, breeders, and zoo keepers/owners/directors care deeply about the well being of animals; it is their livelihood! We therefore, suggest the listener take a closer look at the fundamental differences between animal welfare and the animal extremism philosophy: For the sake of clarity, the listener should consider the following definitions of animal welfare vs animal rights or extremism. Animal Welfare – Animal welfare includes all animals, whether used for food, companionship, or sport. It is based on a principle of animal ownership and reflects a commonsense approach that animals should be treated well, and animal cruelty is wrong. Animal welfare standards and guidelines for animal use and management are based on sound veterinary and animal husbandry experience, research, and practices. The AVMA views animal welfare as a, “…human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, humane handling, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia”. There should be no unnecessary suffering, including animals that provide for human needs. Animal Extremism - Animal extremists believe in an ideology that there is no distinction between animals and humans. They view animal ownership of any kind as exploitation and slavery. The true goal of Animal Extremist groups is to work for legislation and regulations only until all animals are no longer owned or utilized by human beings.

  • 1002 Stephen E Lee; Passing Down Western Wisdom and Wit
    Feb 23 2022
My husband and I recently purchased our Indian Springs ranch from Stephen E Lee and his wife Kate. The purchase was not something that I saw coming prior to last November, but what can I say, I have always tried to be open to the road before me and the crossroads that I come across. The ranch makes sense for our cattle production and my husband, Jacob's desire to offer an authentic working ranch experience for those that wish to grow beyond a dude ranch experience. I sit down with Stephen E Lee, musician, artist and now retired rancher and discuss how his agrarian roots have shaped and influenced his life. He does an amazing job painting the picture of cattle producer challenges and what it is like to operate a desert ranch in Cochise County Arizona. We are lucky to have Stephen (and wife Kate) as friends, who are quick to share wisdom and wit. I hope our listeners will enjoy his depiction time at Indian Springs Ranch. #stephenelee, #Songsfromtheflyingheart, #Onerainaway, #arizonadesertranch, #ranching, #cowboyrockandroll, indianspringsworkingranch, #westernlife, #cattleproducer, #horseman,
