  • The Resilience Plan: A Strategic Approach to Mental Fitness with Dr. Marie-Hélène Pelletier (Part Two)
    May 28 2024
In the second part of this episode, Kathleen and guest Dr. Marie Hélène Pelletier dive deeper into the topic of burnout in the workplace. Dr. Pelletier explains that burnout is defined by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon with three main characteristics - exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the early signs of burnout, such as reduced energy, disengagement, and tasks starting to fall through the cracks, before they progress to full-blown burnout with exhaustion and cynicism. Catching burnout early makes it easier to course-correct. Dr. Pelletier advises taking small, personalized actions to regain a sense of control and self-efficacy, which can help rebuild hope and counter cynicism. However, she acknowledges that sometimes an unhealthy workplace system may require leaving the organization. The conversation also touches on embracing vulnerability as a leader to create an environment where employees feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work. Dr. Pelletier suggests starting small by sharing something personal in team interactions. Overall, the episode provides insights for individuals on strategically managing their resilience through micro-changes, as well as guidance for organizations on supporting employee mental health and preventing burnout.

However, she notes that the challenge lies in implementing these factors amidst the demands of modern life. Her book, The Resilience Plan, offers a strategic approach to cultivating personal resilience. The conversation also explores how leaders and organizations can support employees' mental health.
