Cut The Power Conspiracy

  • Summary

  • OTTAWA — Canada is considering cutting off its energy supply to the United States if President-elect Donald Trump imposes sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods. “Everything is on the table,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Wednesday, following a meeting with Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who leads the oil-rich province of Alberta, did not endorse a joint statement from the leaders that aimed to present a united front against Trump’s potential economic actions, which are imminent. Smith expressed her concerns on social media, noting that federal government officials are publicly and privately suggesting that Canada might cut off energy supplies to the U.S. and impose export tariffs on Alberta's energy and other products heading to the United States. “Until these threats cease, Alberta will not be able to fully support the federal government’s plan in addressing the proposed tariffs,” she posted on X.

Canada is the largest supplier of energy to the U.S., providing approximately 60 percent of the country’s crude oil imports. As of 2020, Canada accounted for 98 percent of U.S. natural gas imports, 93 percent of its electricity imports, and 28 percent of its uranium purchases.
