Crocodile Rock: A Music Podcast Hosted by a Crocodile Specialist!

By: Brandon Sideleau
  • Summary

  • I decided to create a bit of an experiment. Long before I entered the field of crocodilian science, I worked as a music journalist. This was from around 2001-2006, so from the age of 18 to 23. Despite moving on from that line of work, I have long maintained a love of music. I have always gravitated towards non-mainstream music, since I find most mainstream music (from MOST, but not all, eras) to be artificial, soulless and largely devoid of anything interesting or of artistic integrity. Now, that doesn't mean this podcast is ALL punk rock. I love a wide-variety of styles- ranging from hardcore and post-punk to jazz to blues to experimental noise to doom metal...and everything in between. BandCamp has been a godsend for me over the past decade, as it allows me people to check out music that they otherwise may never hear. Musicians can literally make their music and upload it and get paid a fair percentage (compared to services like Spotify, which nickel and dime musicians and provide very little in the way of musical discovery. When someone says "music sucks today", they couldn't be more wrong. Its just that mainstream music sucks...but when has it not? For 5 minutes in the late 1960s? For moments in the 1950s? For a brief period in the early 1990s? Music is the same that it has always been. In any case, I will provide extended commentary for each track, particularly if I have some personal experiences that related to it. This project is a labor of love for me and I do not know how many of you are interested or even care but, if you DO give it a shot, I thank you. And if enough people seem to like it, I'll keep making them. But don't expect to hear the latest hits here...that's not what this podcast is about. If you want that, just turn on the radio.

  • Crocodile Rock Episode One, Part One
    Dec 10 2023

The first episode is a two-parter, since my wife stated that people are less likely to listen to something two hours long! This first episode will cover mostly older bands, so you get an idea of my tastes and some of the classics that you very well may have never heard before. If this is successful and I get positive responses, I will make more with much of the recent music (2020-2023) that I have been ravenously devouring from BandCamp. The playlist for the first half of the episode is as follows-

1.) The Gun Club: Mother Of Earth (from the 1982 album Miami)

2.) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Loom of the Land (from the 1991 album Henry's Dream)

3.) Dengue Fever: Sleepwalking Through the Mekong (single; 2005?)

4.) Bad Religion: What Can You Do (from the 1988 album Suffer)

5.) FEAR: Camarillo (from the 1982 album The Record)

6.) Husker Du: Green Eyes (from the 1985 album Flip Your Wig)

7.) X: Poor Girl (from the 1983 album More Fun in the New World)

8.) Blixa Bargeld: A Quiet Life (from the 2013 album Still Smiling)
