• Raising Her Voice with Raquel Russell
    Feb 24 2021

In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Raquel A. Russell, a fellow University of Toronto alumni, who is a writer, podcaster at Talking Stories with Raquel Russell and communications professional at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The article Raquel wrote for U of T Magazine: Out of Action, Comes Hope made me truly reflect on my time as a student at U of T and realize that none of my professors were Black. In our conversation, Raquel was kind enough to share her story behind writing the article as well as her experience as a minority student of The University of Toronto.

  • The Plastic Predicament with Sally Earthrowl
    Feb 10 2021

Have you ever wondered where plastic goes when you throw it “away’? Hint: there is no such thing as AWAY. Do you ever ask yourself about the negative consequences of plastic pollution in marine ecosystems? What about how much plastic is in or on the food that you eat?

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sally Earthrowl, Mission Leader of eXXpedition, which is a Community Interest Company and not-for-profit organization that pioneers all-female (*insert hands cheering emoji*)sailing research expeditions at sea and virtually voyages on land to investigate the causes of and solutions to ocean plastic pollution.

Sally and I have an in-depth conversation about how eXXpedition is on a mission to understand the plastics issue as a whole and to work with industry to pinpoint solutions and policy at a global level by addressing knowledge-gaps and delivering evidence to inform effective solutions. We discuss everything from gyres to single use plastic, data collection to diversity in science and sailing. Hope you enjoy!

Some resources Sally mentions are linked below:

Shifting Your Choices - Select how, in what aspect of life and where you want to create a shift, from sea to source. From simple consumer choices, to more complex industry actions, you can explore ideas that create long term change.

Marine Debris Tracker - this is the circulatory assessment tool/protocol Sally refers to in our conversation. This app is currently being used in a global citizens science initiative to log marine debris throughout the world.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean.

eXXpedition - learn more about their team, missions, research and how to get involved!

  • Talking with a Trailblazer - Kelly Bergeron
    Jan 7 2021

In this episode, I had a conversation that I had been yearning to have for a while. Talking with a woman in tech. But not just any woman; Kelly Bergeron is an unapologetically ambitious, insanely intelligent individual who simultaneously gives off best friend vibes. We covered a lot of topics in this episode including her time working at Salesforce, the value of diversity in the tech industry and what Kelly has accomplished within her own community in Cornwall, Ontario. She is an inspiration to me and listening to her talk can give anyone the courage to stand up and change the world.

  • My Wish for Waste with Bill Higgins
    Dec 30 2019

Solutions with Sutera is something I hold near to my heart. Sutera makes sorting waste convenient, safe and sustainable. In this episode, I speak with Sutera's Business Development Officer, Mr. Bill Higgins about the power of smart waste management solutions. As I start to gather my big picture understanding of how the world of stuff works, I am quickly realizing that there are many shortcomings in the idea of "going-green". One of those shortcomings is not being able to handle the capacity of waste human beings are producing. It is pretty clear to me that how we think of disposing our garbage must become more deliberate. Sutera has created and is continuing to develop innovative waste solutions that has the potential to change our current system. I believe that it is important for more people to start to grapple with the idea "where does my stuff go?", in order to change the amount of waste that is currently circulating. From dog-poop to textiles, recyclables to compost, everything has the ability to become circular from production to end of life, if we start to challenge the norm. Bill not only provides context to the current problem but also insight about viable solutions. I will be starting a campaign to install a dog poop containment system in my neighbourhood, anyone have any advice about how to go about this?

    Who is Sutera? https://www.suterausa.com/

  • The Mighty Mayor: A tête-à-tête with the Brilliant Bernadette
    Dec 24 2019

This glass-shattering, cosmic genius of a woman allowed me the privilege of sitting down with her and discussing her role as the mayor of Cornwall (Ontario, Canada) and the future for this immensely innovative city. Spending time in Cornwall, meeting with business owners, historians and residents, I quickly became enamoured with this powerhouse of a city and wanted to sit down with their mayor to discuss its, well for a lack of a better word, amazingness. As you listen, you may quickly gather that Mme. Mayor Bernadette Clement is both inspirational and encouraging. Her limitless capacity to lead with compassion and empathy is refreshing and awe inspiring. Her humble yet strategic approach to progress the future of Cornwall is evident via her deliberate relationship building technique with pretty much anyone she meets. Whether it is breaking bread with the Grand Chief of Akwesasne, discussing mental health awareness with youth or working with council to include environmental sustainability in purchasing decisions and creating targets to lower the city’s carbon footprint, Mayor Bernadette actively participates within her community to create positive change for the future. She is exactly the type of person the world needs more of!

  • Social Justice and Female Empowerment with Rebekah
    Nov 4 2019

The system of the world is something I find myself constantly challenging. Why are things the way they are? Can strategic systematic changes actually occur? My friend Rebekah and I discuss gender equity in society and the struggles humanity faces stemming from the imbalance of power. We steer the conversation towards the choices we as privileged woman can make in order to help women who are stuck. We believe that we must lift each other up, provide education and opportunity for women to succeed and then perhaps we can cause disruption.

Please follow Rebekah through her platform In Hope and Justice to learn more about the power of your decisions and how social justice can be achieved.

  • The Future of AI with Brendan
    Oct 7 2019

The future of artificial intelligence and machine learning is something I often ponder about. Can we actually create HAL or David or Jarvis? Will creating super intelligence spell out a fate of extinction for human beings? What will the role of humans be if machines do all the "work"? I invited my friend Brendan to sit down and answer some of these questions with me in this episode. If you have any comments, questions and/or advice please reach me on any of my socials.
