Chronically Evolve Podcast Ep.1

  • Summary

  • The Sonia Nabeta Foundation (SNF) was founded by the Nabeta family in honor of their daughter and sister, Sonia Stephanie Nabeta who fought a valiant fight against T1D until she joined the angels on August 5, 2015. Vivian NaBeta joined me for a dynamic discussion on what living with diabetes in Africa is like, what is needed and how it is being accomplished. Sonia Nabeta Foundation currently has programs operating as a system to help aide in the systematic changes that are so desperately needed.

    PROJECT BODA-BODA

Project Boda-boda’s principal goal is to improve access to healthcare for children with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Africa by establishing a network of motorcycle taxis to distribute insulin and essential supplies to children with type 1 diabetes. The pilot program starts in Uganda.

    PROJECT TUYINZA

Project Tuyinza aims to develop knowledgeable, empowered and educated warriors to improve their long-term health prospects; equip them with the requisite advocacy tools and increased agency to create a policy environment that best represents their own needs and stigma-free and socially supportive communities.

    PROJECT ELIMU

(PROJECT MISHRA) Education is a major determinant of health. Education empowers and improves skills such as literacy, numeracy, cognitive ability which can affect health directly(understanding and complying with health care regimens, improving doctor-patient communication, empowering children to advocate for themselves particularly in communities where stigma is rampant) and indirectly (foundation for productive and gainful lives). Project Mishra is the pilot program offering education scholarships to children in Uganda. Project Elimu scales up Project Mishra into an education and medical campus.

    PAMOJA ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Pamoja Advocacy Program, a partnership between T1International and SNF, aims to create a community that has accessible and affordable healthcare, with supportive and stigma free communities for people with T1D across Africa. https://www.sonianabetafoundation.org
