Driver was convicted of multiple charges, including malice murder and cruelty to children. Despite a defense plea of insanity, the jury held her criminally responsible. The crime occurred in Canton, where Driver, part of a nomadic group, stabbed her daughter and herself. The child died from her injuries despite rescue efforts. The trial featured 21 witnesses and 135 exhibits. Sentencing is set for December 12, with the Department of Corrections addressing Driver's mental health needs. Over 150 entries were judged, and winners received certificates and ribbons. The winners spanned grades 3-12, with first-place honors going to Parker Guyette (Grade 5), Kierstin Foster (Grade 8), and Ella Biesterveld (Grade 12). STORY 5: Industrial Machinery Business Coming to SW Cherokee The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning request for DJD Southeast Real Estate Holdings to build a 35,000-square-foot industrial machinery sales building on Little Ridge Road. Commercial: CU of GA (06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL) STORY 1: Community Center Under Ownership of Cherokee County Nonprofit Cherokee County has transferred ownership of the Charlie Ferguson Community Center to the nonprofit managing its programs. The county's Board of Commissioners approved the transfer, which includes a reverter clause to return ownership if the center ceases operations or faces financial issues. Originally a volunteer fire station, the center was refurbished with grant funds to serve the community. The nonprofit was given a year to prepare for managing utilities and maintenance. The center, which opened in July 2023, includes a food pantry supported by SmileUp! Charitable Foundation. STORY 2: Bond Set for Amazon Driver Accused of Fatal Hit and Run in Cherokee Bond has been set at $75,000 for London Best, a 24-year-old Amazon driver accused of a hit-and-run that killed 79-year-old Sandra Fitts in Cherokee County. The incident occurred on Cumming Highway, and Best allegedly continued delivering packages afterward. He faces charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. A search of the Amazon van revealed narcotics, leading to additional charges for possession of marijuana, THC wax, and drug-related objects. Best remains in custody, and the crash is under investigation by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit. STORY 3: Bizarre Coffee Raises over $4K for The Children’s Haven Bizarre Coffee's Bizarre Bash and Dash event on Nov. 16 in downtown Canton raised over $4,000 for The Children's Haven. The day began with a 5K run, generating $3,057 for the nonprofit. Following the run, the Bizarre Bash featured over 30 vendors, a pasta eating contest, art projects, and a kids' area with activities like a bounce house and face painting. The pasta contest winner directed a $1,000 donation to The Children's Haven. The first 100 customers received a special tote bag with gifts to celebrate the shop's four-year anniversary. Back in a moment Break: Drake (Drake Realty (Cherokee County) STORY 4: State medical cannabis registry reaches 25,000 Georgia's medical cannabis program has reached a milestone with 25,000 patients enrolled in the registry, allowing the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission to open more dispensaries. Currently, 13 dispensaries are operated by six licensed production companies. The program, aimed at improving patient access, began in 2015 but only established a legal framework for obtaining cannabis oil in 2019. The number of dispensaries will increase with every 10,000-patient registry growth. Recent listening sessions across universities have contributed to the program's expansion by gathering valuable feedback from various stakeholders. STORY 5: Georgia Foundation For Agriculture Offering $65K in Scholarships The Georgia Foundation for Agriculture is offering $65,000 in scholarships to Georgia students pursuing degrees in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and related fields. Scholarships are available in four categories: 1. Scholarship for Agriculture: Ten $3,000 scholarships for high school students entering Georgia colleges with ag programs, with the top two eligible for an additional $1,500. 2. Technical College Scholarship for Agriculture: Four $1,500 scholarships for students in technical colleges majoring in ag-related fields. 3. Rising College Junior/Senior Scholarship for Agriculture: Eight $2,000 scholarships for college juniors/seniors in ag programs. 4. Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Canton City Council Denies Pearidge Development Proposal The Canton City Council rejected a request to annex nearly 63 acres for a mixed-use development in the Pearidge community, with Mayor Bill Grant casting the tie-breaking vote. The annexation, proposed by Pearidge Land Investments, LLC, aimed to combine the land with an existing 8.5-acre property for a total of about 70.72 acres. The council also denied the request to combine the properties. Mayor Grant emphasized a "quality over quantity" approach to growth, aligning with residents' needs and the city's roadmap. The proposed development included 215 homes and commercial space, but the annexation denial halted the project. STORY 2: CSO: Canton Woman Killed in Hit and Run Collision A pedestrian, Sandra Fitts, 79, was fatally struck in a hit-and-run on Highway 20, Cherokee County, on Tuesday night. The incident involved an Amazon delivery truck, identified by evidence at the scene. Deputies and a Canton police officer located the truck on Bishop Drive, matching the accident's evidence. The driver, London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. He remains in custody without bond as the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit continues the investigation. STORY 3: Perry Ellis Opens at The Outlet Shoppes At Atlanta The Outlet Shoppes At Atlanta in Woodstock has added a new Perry Ellis store, offering a mix of high fashion and casual menswear, including polos, linen shirts, and footwear. This 2,400 square-foot location is the brand's 40th outlet store. The addition aims to enhance men's shopping options, as noted by Todd Chauvin, the general manager, who highlighted the store's appeal for holiday shopping and gift-giving. Firefighters have been housed in a mobile unit since 2017 due to the building's condition. The renovation aims to preserve the station's historical significance while enhancing functionality.
