• Taking the pulse of the NBA Cup in its second year with Jack LaFrance
    Nov 12 2024
The annual league event known somewhat generically as the "in-season tournament" has returned for its second-ever iteration, and it has a new name to go with it. Now known as the "NBA Cup," the midseason tourney is starting to pick up some momentum from fans and players alike, yet is still far from being a hands-down hit that is certain to return for many years to come. What do we like about the NBA Cup? What still needs work? What else could they add to it to make it even better? And with regard to this season's NBA Cup, what do we think of the Celtics being in East Group C with the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Washington Wizards? Will Boston advance to the knockout round in Las Vegas? Could they win it all this year? To take the pulse of the NBA Cup ahead of the start of the Group Play phase kicking off this week, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast cohost and Celtics Blog analyst Sam LaFrance. Join us as we get down to brass tacks on the event formerly known as the IST, as well as the recent news surrounding Boston and the rest of the league. • What's up with the Bucks (and are they still a threat to Boston)? With Dalton Sell
    Nov 5 2024
What is going on with the Milwaukee Bucks to start the 2024-25 NBA regular season (and are they still a threat to Boston)? This was supposed to be the season that star Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and new(ish) arrival Damian Lillard learned to play together, that coach Doc Rivers got the team chemistry in order, and that Khris Middleton got back on the court with two healthy ankles. But none of those things has happened yet, and after a 1-5 start and comments about trades leaving the mouth of the Greek Freak, the time to push the panic button is closer than ever. Should the Boston Celtics stop worrying about Milwaukee to focus on the rest of the East? Or can this team still be a threat to Boston come the 2025 NBA Playoffs? To try to get a handle on what's behind the Bucks' rough start and how much fo a threat they might be this and in future seasons, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with Dalton Sell of Behind the Buck Pass and Hoops Habit to talk it over. They also get into what's been going down elsewhere in the East, the Mexico City Game and NBA Expansion, and get caught up on the news. Check it out! • What 3 wins and an official sim tell us about Boston's season ahead with Ronnie 2K
    Oct 28 2024
Not even a full week has passed, and we are already projecting the entire NBA season for the Boston Celtics off entirely too little data. But that has never stopped the league's media from trying to do so in the past, and we have new tools to project how the season might go in NBA 2K's official season projection for the Celtics that the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast sat down with NBA 2K spokesperson Ronnie "2K" Singh to learn more about what might happen in the season ahead. Ronnie gets us up to speed on what went down in the official sim, and how his unique point of view affects how he sees the league's 2024-25 regular season and beyond may unfold. We also get into the news and results of real games that count to get our first glimpses at what the contours of the season ahead might tell us. Join us as we beat a sample size entirely too small to tell us much to death, while learning everything we need to know about what the official 2K sim can tell us about what Boston might encounter on a run at Banner 19. • Boston makes Ring Night historic, crush Knicks in season opener
    Oct 23 2024
The Boston Celtics elected to take Ring Night to a whole new level, blowing out the new-look New York Knicks 132-109. That it was against the team that was framed as their biggest rival for the 2024-25 NBA regular season made the victory all the more sweet, wrapping up a timeless ring ceremony replete with Celtics champions of past eras there to celebrate the historic moment pre-game. Most impressive of all was star Boston forward Jayson Tatum, who had himself one of the most efficient nights in league history on his way to putting up 37 points and 10 assists, while the Celtics as a team tied the record for made 3s (29 in total) in the win. What was worth a second look from the big celebration? What is sustainable from the beatdown victory? And what else should we take from Game 1 of 82 in the new regular season? The hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast convened directly from TD Garden to talk it all over, so check it out below. The Celtics Lab podcast is brought to you by Prize Picks and Gametime. • Stock up, down, or steady - surveying the NBA ahead of opening night
    Oct 22 2024
The 2024 NBA offseason is coming to an end, and the 2024-25 regular season kicking off with it. Which teams around the league have seen their stock rise in recent weeks? Which clubs have seen their stock fall, and which are holding steady as injuries, extensions, and signings shift the title odds ever so slightly? And of course, where are the Boston Celtics trending throughout all of this as opening night is upon us? The hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast sat down to talk out where each team in the league is headed as the new NBA season begins. We also get into what might happen with the team's open roster spot after Lonnie Walker was cut, which other camp invitees are headed where, and propose expanding the infrastructural honor bestowed on Celtics legend Bill Russell even further. Join us for one last look at the landscape of the league before the games start to count, and Boston (hopefully) inches closer to hanging a 19th banner. • On what it takes to be a repeat NBA champ (and whether Boston has it) with Adam Mares
    Oct 15 2024
What does it take to repeat as an NBA champion -- and do the Boston Celtics have it? There has not been a repeat champ in the league since 2018, and there have only been a handful since the turn of the century. At present, the Celtics are heavy favorites to win it all and hang Banner 19, but what does the past tell us about Boston's potential future as a back-to-back champ? What helps a team repeat from one season to the next? What can get in the way? And which of these things are even under anyone's control? To get to the bottom of that particular pile of data, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with cohost of the "All-NBA" pod and DNVR Sports analyst Adam Mares. We took a magnifying glass to the last three franchises to pull off the rare feat and the last three teams which did not, and took notes on what Boston is already doing -- and what else they might want to work at to add to their repeat odds. We also cover how Boston has looked in preseason play, who might make the last open roster spot (and when), if anyone, and our thoughts on the state of NBA docuseries among other things, so be sure to tune in. • Projecting Boston's '24-25 wins, rotations after Abu Dhabi
    Oct 8 2024
The Boston Celtics have finished their training camp and kicked off their 2024-25 NBA preseason with a pair of wins over the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi. And around the rest of the league, preseasons are kicking off with the last of the trades and signings we are likely to see until the month of December having been finalized. With these data points, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast took a last look at which teams we think will find success in the 2024-24 regular season, which teams are likely to capture the (Cooper) Flagg, and what we learned from Boston's wins in the United Arab Republic about how the Celtics will play this coming campaign. We gamified the "Lab" portion of our programming into a friendly wager among the cohosts, so if you have an idea of what the winner (or the losers) should do, be sure to let us know with a comment on the social media network formerly known as Twitter. • On how the team's sale and the Karl-Anthony Towns trade impacts the start of Boston's season with Bobby Manning
    Oct 1 2024
The Boston Celtics have had their Media Day and training camp early to facilitate their preseason exhibitions in Abu Dhabi later this week, but they have done so with a few notable shadows hanging over the storied ball club. The more imminent and tangible of those two shadows comes in the shape of Karl-Anthony Towns having been dealt from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks. The other of the two is more phantasmal and harder to pin down, simply due to the ephemeral and volatile nature of the moving pieces involved. That would be the pending sale of the team we just learned more about through a recent article from the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach. Just how much are these twin specters making their presence known to the Celtics at training camp? To get to the bottom of this question, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with the "Garden Report" podcast host and Celtics beat writer Bobby Manning to get a feel about where these issues register among the players and coaching staff ahead of the start of their title defense. Both loom large in very different ways as potential barriers to Banner 19, but is it too early for either to impact the Celtics? The Celtics Lab podcast is brought to you by Prize Picks and Gametime.
