  • Year in Review and Looking Forward to 2025
    Jan 9 2025
We reflect on the whirlwind that was 2024 at BaT. There's a temporal argument leading up to an extended plug for our upcoming event at Otto Car Club during Arizona Car week; excitement for Retromobile in Paris; what everyone got up to over the holidays; teaching kids the highs and lows about old trucks in the snow; the most popular makes, models, and production years of 2024; bad poker habits; bad auction timing for a hi-po Benz; a brief and very angular flash in the pan; favorite listings from the past year; values to be had in the 1950s Italian market; our greatly improved listing turnaround times; our professional goals for 2025; and a new role for Randy. • Keith Martin of Sports Car Market on a Fascinating Career and the Modern State of Affairs
    Jan 2 2025

In Episode 102 of the BaT Podcast: Sports Car Market Editor and Publisher, Keith Martin (BaT username: 330america), talks about his wildly varying career arc; formative times on a tractor in Novato; vintage Volvos; a $30 Bugeye as a first car (and one uniquely suited to the utility paths at Golden Gate Park); being driven into the arms of Alfa Romeo by a prototypical experience in an MGA; one of many tough aspects of recovery from a stroke; Sportomatic stories; Alfa SS hot-rodding tips; going "skinny" after years of fat tires; perhaps the least likely use of a dance degree from Juilliard; what counted as a "classic" car in 1968; vintage page layout software; the "secret sauce" of SCM, then and now; doing old car things in new cars, and vice versa; the current structure of the magazine and a plug for subscriptions; the most loving use of the terms "troll" and "reeducation program"; the importance of adhering to one's standards no matter how times change; one inescapable truth about any car collection; and absolute faith in the next generation's love for cars.

  • IMSA, NASCAR, RX-7s, and Berettas with Tommy Kendall
    Dec 26 2024

In Episode 101 of the BaT Podcast, Alex sits down with multidsiciplinary racing legend Tommy Kendall to discuss the dangers of the BaT Daily Mail; an argument for the '74 Carrera as the first Southern California SUV; a fortuitous version of the classic "someone else's race car/boat/RV" story; his particularly well-timed upbringing by an enthusiastic new racer; coming up in karting and Formula Mazda; meeting compatriot Max Jones; the eye-watering costs of going racing in the early '80s; the value of a Showroom Stock education; his stewardship of the winningest IMSA car in history (with many of said wins coming with him at the wheel); a two-hour peripheral-port rotary rebuild under duress; water-cooled brake calipers; an untimely realization concerning NASCAR brakes at Willow Springs; nascent Chili Bowl plans; his move into commentatorship through no effort of his own; sage advice for anyone pushing the boundaries; a predilection for giant American land yachts, including but not limited to those masquerading as chickens; and their mutual affection for gold-flake Sanger powerboats.

  • The Many Porsches of Magnus Walker
    Dec 5 2024

In episode 98 of the BaT Podcast, Alex heads to the downtown LA Arts District to talk Porsches and eclectic tastes with none other than Magnus Walker, who just happens to be well known in both arenas. The conversation includes appreciation for Alex's (soon to be for sale) NSX; the amazing live/work/play studio that Walker's media operations and collection call home; his early exposure to the car scene in and around Sheffield, land of fine stainless steel; a $200 1977 Corolla coupe as his first car in LA, and his modern quest to find another; acquiring his first-ever Porsche at the Pomona Swap Meet in 1992, famously kicking off a spree that has continued for 32 years and counting; building a collection when Porsches were affordable used cars for enthusiasts; the differences, or absence thereof, between a 901 and an early 911; the evolution of the 930 Turbo; the relative merits of every RS; non-Porsche marques that scratch an itch, including some surprising picks and a little dabbling in Lotus-land; his recently released project as a design consultant for Tom Walkinshaw Racing with Khyzyl Saleem; his respect for Jay Leno as a car enthusiast; and the best places to soak up inspiration.
