  • Tori Petersen: Breaking the Patterns that Break You
    Jan 19 2025

Your brokenness does not point to a deficit in who you are. It’s in those very places that God reveals the beauty of your story, which started when you were created good.

If you’ve ever asked the question “Is there something wrong with me?” or “Will I ever move past the pain to experience healing?” this conversation will give you the hope and tools you need to get unstuck from the patterns in your life and find healing that lasts.

Tori Hope Petersen is a leading advocate for foster care and a general lover of people. She will help you do the hard work of breaking the patterns that have broken you so you can see who you truly are - good, safe and loved.

  • Jared Stacy: Holy Paranoia
    Jan 12 2025

The foundation of the Christian faith is belief in a story. But what about the other stories that get tangled with Christianity? Everything from the big conspiracies of QAnon and End Times prophecies to pop culture claims of Taylor Swift and Wicked indoctrinating our children with witchcraft and evil. Unverifiable claims of stolen elections, hidden agendas and people in power who can control the weather are modern ideologies that pervade our current timeline. As Christians, how do we know who to believe and what’s true? How do we live in the world but not of it? When does belief in a story become holy paranoia? And how do we keep from getting sucked into it?

Theologian and ethicist Jared Stacy is here to help us understand why conspiracy theories are so prevalent among people of faith and why, as Christians, we need to pay attention to them. Let’s look at digital media and fact checking through a Christian lens.

  • Erin Moon: I’ve Got Questions
    Jan 5 2025

The Bible is weird so you should have questions. Author and podcaster Erin Moon is inviting anyone who feels iffy, conflicted or just downright devastated by a lack of curiosity in the church to lean in. Her book, “I’ve Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having it Out with God” will help you reclaim what you once loved about your faith and finally release what doesn’t make sense.

If you’ve felt alone in your deconstruction or your rejection of “clear, black and white” extremism, you will find empathy and hope in this episode. If you’ve felt that still small voice calling you to explore your faith origins for deeper meaning or to see God in a new light, you will find permission and encouragement here.

Your questions are welcome and healthy.

  • Becoming Church? Here’s what it means.
    Dec 29 2024

In 2022, Pastors Naeem Fazal and Kristin Mockler Young started a podcast as a discipleship tool for Mosaic Church. The goal was to help people take ownership of their personal relationships with Jesus and start to develop their own faith practices. Mosaic Church exists to reclaim the message and movement of Jesus. While we value the importance of gathering together on Sundays, we also believe Jesus’ call for his (Big “C”) Church is to exist outside of sanctuaries and buildings. The goal is not just for us to become Christians, but to become His Church.

Becoming Church transformed from a sermon series to this podcast, helping people across the United States and 25 other countries to unlearn toxic theology and relearn what it really means to be a follower of Jesus in every area of their lives.

As the host, Kristin has started wrapping up each episode with the question “What can people listening do to become the church to the people around them?” As a fun bonus episode, here are a few of her favorite answers from these guests, in this order:

Elizabeth Tabish, Mary Magadlene from The Chosen
Dave Gibbons, The Shape of My Eyes and New Song Church
Sarah Bessey, Fieldnotes for the Wilderness
Jami Nato, This Must be the Place
Rich Villodas, The Narrow Path and New Life Fellowship Church
Jess Connolly, Tired of Being Tired and Bright City Church
    Marty Solomon, The BEMA Podcast
KJ Scriven, award winning songwriter and vocalist
    Sarah Stewart Holland, Pantsuit Politics
    Beth Silvers, Pantsuit Politics
Joel Muddamalle, Humble Theology and The Hidden Peace
Bri Stensrud, Start with Welcome and Women of Welcome
    Sheila Gregoire, She Deserves Better
Jemar Tisby, The Spirit of Justice
    Kayla Craig, Every Season Sacred
Shannan Martin, Start with Hello and The Minsitry of Ordinary Spaces
Rasool Berry, The Whole Man and Juneteeth, Faith & Freedom
    Alexandra Hoover, Eyes Up
    Evan Dodson, Faith Adjacent Podcast
Cheryl Nembhard, On the Path and and See Hear Love

  • Wendy Snyder: Parenting through Winter Break
    Dec 15 2024

It’s the week between Christmas and New Years. No one knows what day it is, what time it is or what you should be doing. Your kids are feral, having likely been out of school for days on end. There’s extra sugar, extra stimulation, extra affection from relatives but less structure and routine. How do you survive this week and - more impossibly - how are you supposed to parent through it?!

Wendy Snyder is your Parenting Coach for the holidays. She will help you be firm but kind and replace punishment with natural consequences. You can change your family dynamics by shifting your parenting goal to connection with your child instead of controlling their behavior.

Also, we will be discussing Santa in the first part of the episode so please grab some headphones or ensure there are no little listening ears nearby for spoilers.

    ————

Get Wendy’s free “Compassionate Discipline” Quick Start learning bundle or listen to The Fresh Start Show to live life as a more confident parent (with kids that listen and cooperate).

For last minute gifts, bring a friend or loved one into the conversation here at Becoming Church by gifting one of the books on our Resource List! (Your purchase also adds a few pennies to our tithe box.)

  • Sharon Hodde Miller: Controlling Christmas
    Dec 8 2024

God has not given us control but He’s given us something better. Especially around the holidays when relationships are strained, our bodies refuse to cooperate and the future is uncertain, control promises security and peace. If only we could put that on our Christmas lists to find wrapped up underneath the tree. But in reality, the more we grasp for the illusion of control, the more it betrays us.

Sharon Hodde Miller will help you replace your anxiety with peace and find unity amidst division. The answer is not just to “let go and let God.” This episode has practical tools for recognizing how your desire to control plays out, what it costs you and how you can find some self-control, even on social media.

    ————

Grab Sharon’s book The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety if Gives Us and the Real Power God Promises on our Becoming Church resource list on Amazon! (Your purchase will also send a few pennies to our tithe box.)

Any of the books on our Book List would make a great Christmas gift, as would a subscription to the clothing rental company that Kristin & Sharon both use!

  • Hannah Brencher: How Do You Want to Feel?
    Dec 1 2024

There is time for rest, even during the holidays. Hannah Brencher is convinced that you can be present “where your feet are” even as you’re being pulled in multiple directions toward shopping, wrapping, parties, events and the general hustle bustle of the holiday season.

This episode makes the connection between our phones and our mental health without asking you to go off the grid. It will also remind you that God is with you in the struggle. There is mention of depression and suicidal ideation in this conversation but there is also hope as we talk about how the church can approach mental health differently. Depression and anxiety are not indications of weak faith and there is more you can do than “pray it away.” Here is a list of resources for you, or to share with a friend, to take steps toward feeling better:
