  • Sugar mill macheté
    Mar 27 2023

Why did they keep a macheté nearby as sugar crane was crushed at the famous Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill?

Tour guide Sherné Alleyne shares the gruesome story. The wind-driven machinery that ground the sugarcane in the 18th and 19th centuries is still intact, but it suffered serious damage during a freak storm in 2021. It is one of the only two intact and restored sugar mills in the Caribbean.

The Barbados National Trust is fundraising to help restore the mill. Visit the website to see how you can support this project. This audio series is produced with the kind help of Barbados Tourism Marketing, Inc.
