  • Assa Marra: “A Love Letter to West Cumbria and the Legend I Married”

This 18th December marks 16 incredible years since I met my husband, madcap adventurer and total legend, John Williamson. To celebrate this milestone, I’ve created Assa Marra—a 10-episode podcast series that is as much a tribute to him as it is to the place we both hold so dear: West Cumbria.

West Cumbria has been the backdrop to our love story. Its rugged landscapes, rich history, and incredible people mirror the qualities I adore in him: strength, humour, indomitable nature, and an unstoppable spirit. Over the years, we’ve found inspiration in the stories of this county’s remarkable characters, from legends like Josh Naylor to the everyday heroes whose contributions have gone unnoticed.

Through Assa Marra, I weave our love story with the soul of West Cumbria. These 10 episodes are deeply personal, recounting not only the moments that have defined our relationship but also the beauty of the people and places that have been part of our journey.

Assa Marra blends highlights from my previous podcast, Gobsmacked!, with brand-new radio interviews, creating a unique tapestry of stories that celebrate both our personal journey and the vibrant spirit of West Cumbria.

As the creator of Gobsmacked!—a podcast loved in 114 countries—I’m thrilled to use this platform to bring West Cumbria’s charm, humour, and spirit to a global audience. Above all, Assa Marra is my gift to John: a celebration of the life we’ve built together and the magical county that continues to inspire us.

  • Episode 2: Gary Graham and Gary McKee
    Dec 19 2024

Welcome to Episode 2 of Assa Marra, where we’re celebrating two proper West Cumbrian legends—Gary McKee, the ‘Marathon Man’ from Cleator Moor who ran 365 marathons in a year, and Gary Graham, better known as Gary Mankini, originally from Whitehaven.

Gary McKee’s graft and determination have inspired folk round here, while Gary Mankini brings a bit of craic and daftness with his antics, including his now-famous mankini. He’s the sort of bloke who can mek anyone smile and always has time for his marras.

These two couldn’t be more different, but they’re both grand examples of what makes West Cumbria so special—hard work, a good laugh, and a heart as big as the fells. So let’s get stuck in and celebrate two blokes who’ve left their mark on this corner of the world in their own unique ways.

    Dec 20 2024

In Episode 3 of “Assa Marra,” I'm absolutely thrilled to chat with Richard Askwith, the acclaimed author behind Feet in the Clouds. This book dives deep into the exhilarating world of fell running, capturing the essence of the sport, its challenges as well as its hero’s .

Touching on the Bob Graham Round—a legendary fell running challenge in the Lake District - this gruelling 66-mile circuit over 42 peaks, with an ascent of 26,900 feet, was first completed by Bob Graham in 1932 and has since become a bucket-list achievement for endurance runners and the nemesis of Richard.

We’ll also delve into the rugged beauty of Cumbria, whose dramatic landscapes have inspired countless adventurers and writers alike. It’s a reet good listen, marra!
