    The first major battle of the island hopping campaign began in the Solomon Islands on August 7, 1942. American Marines come ashore at Guadalcanal and the surrounding islands in an effort to secure the region from Japanese control. Although the Marines make great progress in the coming days, the U.S. Navy suffered their worst defeat in history. The campaign to establish a foothold in the Southwest Pacific becomes a very costly and deadly six month operation for both sides involved.
