132. Why Britain Isn’t A “Science Superpower”

  • Summary

  • Steph and Robert speak to Sir Paul Nurse - Nobel Prize winning cell biologist and Director of the Francis Crick Institute - about how science funding needs to change, why the UK is failing to lure global talent, how we scrub up against the other OECD countries in terms of research and development and how - despite being a geneticist - it took him 55 years to discover who his biological parents were. What a fascinating interview, about the present, the future, and especially Sir Paul's past.

The early part about the role of science, and what needs to be done by government was very interesting. The final section though had me standing still... wow! What a story. I, too, owe my (limited) success to the role of government (the Wilson govt), and fully agree with his conclusions.
