  • Episode 130: Withnail & I
    Sep 24 2021

I don’t have anything very witty to say about this episode: we end our “Tribute to Ian” series by talking about his favorite film “Withnail & I”. I was so honored to have Liz Woodington (Ian’s wife and guest on our “The Dark Knight” episode) join me to discuss a film so beloved to Ian and so many others. We discuss the peculiarities of Bruce Robinson, the immense quotability of the script, and the wonderful payoff of that final Hamlet speech. Talking about this film without Ian is not the way that anybody wants to hear it, but Liz brought her unique perspective and Ian’s love for this film to the discussion and I could not have hoped for a better episode. This week, Liz recommends “The Boat that Rocked” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Adam recommends “Life Itself” (available on Prime, Kanopy, & Hoopla). I wish I could say that “1001 by 1” is going to continue, but I’m not sure if it will. Please continue to follow us and stay tuned as we slowly re-release our entire back catalog so that Ian’s legacy can live on.

  • Episode 129: Blade Runner
    Sep 20 2021

Quite fitting that our 2nd to last episode in our “Tribute to Ian” series was his 2nd favorite film. As he was a self-proclaimed “Ridley Scott fanboy”, we will be discussing the Sci-Fi noir “Blade Runner” this week. Adam is joined by Brittany Reinholz-Hobson (from our “Audition” episode) to discuss a myriad of topics on this complicated film: from the different cuts to Ridley’s struggles with the producers; from the treatment of Sean Young to the unicorn and “who is a replicant?” question. This movie is a mountain of talking points – and while we did not get to everything, we feel good about the depth we got to on each idea. Also, this week Brittany recommends “I Saw the Devil” (currently ad-free on Kanopy) and Adam recommends “Battle Royale” (also currently ad-free on Kanopy).

  • Episode 128: American Graffiti
    Sep 10 2021

Nothing hits home more than nostalgia – and the next film in our “Tribute to Ian” series if chock full of it. We’re jumping into the 70s to discuss the (outlier) George Lucas film “American Graffiti”. This week, Adam is joined by Chas Messmer (from our “The Blair Witch Project episode”) to discuss this much beloved film: the epic soundtrack, the idea of this movie as a “comedy”, and the legacy that George Lucas will leave behind. Also, this week Chas recommends Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” (currently in theaters) and Adam recommends “Unfriended (currently on Netflix).

  • Episode 127: #127 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
    Sep 3 2021

We’ve reached the halfway point in our “Tribute to Ian” series and this one takes us to Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite with Stanley Kubrick and “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Adam is joined this week by podcaster and film columnist Brian Keiper to discuss everything from mimes as monkeys to whether or not HAL was a sympathetic character. While this film pushes the bounds of reality, we try to keep the conversation as grounded as possible. Also, Adam and Brian bring you their Top 5 Kubrick films. And – this week Brian recommends “Modern Romance” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Adam recommends “True Romance” (available on HBO Max).

  • Episode 1: #126 - The Great Escape
    Aug 27 2021

Week 3 in our “Tribute to Ian” series takes us one year ahead from our “Lawrence of Arabia” episode to another epic of a different sort – John Sturges’ “The Great Escape”. Please tune in as Myke from “CineMusts” joins Adam this week to discuss this rollicking film about the endurance, the need for freedom, and just what the hell is wrong with Bosely Crowther. Is this the epitome of escapes movies? Was Steve McQueen’s behavior on set acceptable? How much was this film shafted at the Oscars? We discuss all this and more. Also, this week Myke recommends “Stalag 17” (available for free on Kanopy or Hoopla) & Adam recommends “It’s Such a Beautiful Day” (available on The Criterion Channel).

  • Episode 25: #125 - Lawrence of Arabia
    Aug 20 2021

Continuing on with our “Tribute to Ian” series takes to 1962 and one of the biggest, grandest, & most monumental films of all time: David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia. This week, Adam is joined by Kieran B. of the Best Picture Cast (also on our “Roman Holiday” episode) to discuss the magnificent production design/editing/cinematography/score, the absurdly negative review from Bosley Crowther, and how Gregory Peck is walking around with Peter O’Toole’s Academy Award. Also, this week Kieran recommends “Million Dollar Baby” (currently on Netflix & HBO Max) and Adam recommends “Pig” (available to rent on most major platforms).
