015: Servant Leadership — How to keep people at the heart of business

  • Summary

  • In 1948, a seasoned executive found himself grappling with a frustrating challenge: how to prepare the next wave of front-line managers. Having climbed the ranks at one of America's largest corporations, he had seen enough of the boardroom mindset that viewed employees as mere cogs in the profit machine. It didn’t sit right with him. Instead of walking away, he chose a different path. He envisioned a radical transformation of corporate culture—one that put people at the heart of business.

For over a decade, he quietly worked behind the scenes, crafting a revolutionary approach to leadership that redefined how companies could nurture their most valuable resource: their people. Drawing from his deep faith, as well as his love for philosophy and history, Greenleaf began to imagine something new. The result? The first-ever Corporate Assessment Center—an unprecedented initiative where future leaders would be assessed not just on technical skills, but on their ability to lead by serving others. This groundbreaking idea laid the foundation for a leadership philosophy that would reverberate across corporate America: servant leadership.

In 1970, Greenleaf gave this philosophy a name and a voice with his essay The Servant as Leader. In it, he distilled a leadership model that stretches back to ancient times, a model most powerfully embodied by a carpenter from Galilee: Jesus of Nazareth.

Greenleaf’s model has reshaped how leadership is viewed in boardrooms and beyond, offering a timeless lesson: real leadership isn’t about power or authority; it’s about serving others.

Which is why on this episode of Success by The Book our three servant leaders themselves will be unpacking how anyone in mortgage and real estate can become a beloved servant leader.
