About this listen
Zenobia was queen of the Middle Eastern city of Palmyra in the third century, C.E. She was renowned for her prowess in battle, as well as her beauty. After her husband, King Odenathus, was assassinated, she and Marcellinus, a centurion sent by Rome to help the Palmyrene forces, became lovers. In time, she led a revolt against the Roman Empire and, for a while, controlled an area ranging from Egypt through modern day Turkey. Meanwhile, her love is tested when Marcellinus journeys to meet with the new Roman Emperor, Aurelian, his close friend and mentor.
Zenobia must now face the full force of the Roman army, including, unbeknownst to her, her lover Marcellinus. How she copes with this onslaught is a credit to the genius and courage of this remarkable woman.
This story is based upon historical events, most of which have actually occurred.
