About this listen

Please note: This content is intended for adults only. It features adult language and themes that may be upsetting to some listeners. Discretion is advised.

Twenty-five-year-old fitness-instructor Elle has been toiling away in the LA rat race since her teen years with nothing to show for it but a “vintage” apartment (with a permanently clogged toilet), an “alt-comedy” (unemployed alcoholic) boyfriend, and an anorexic coworker who’s constantly surpassing Elle at work because her dad owns the place. While Elle might not have a rich daddy to fall back on, her luck changes when she finds herself being aggressively pursued by a hot, rich 45-year-old man, a.k.a. a zaddy.

Zack is a tech millionaire many times over with an irresistible smirk and abs that could shatter your phone screen. After Elle flirts with Zack on his buddy’s yacht, it feels like every area of her life has a glow-up. Literally. Her skin is glistening, she’s madly in love with her well-connected, smoking-hot boyfriend, and soon enough, she’s opening her very own fitness studio for A-list clientele. But when mysterious tragedies strike, Elle is forced to wonder if she can truly afford the good life or if the cost is too rich for her blood after all.

A sexy, twisty thriller written and performed by Sarah Ramos, featuring Chris Messina as Zack.

Has potential

The story is quite good but too short. It requires all characters involved to be explored more.I want to know more about the best friend, more about the (ex-)boyfriend,their motivations, their feelings, their past.I am missing details in surroundings and experiences of the characters with each other. There were moments I thought I had accidentally jumped ahead because we were suddenly in a different scene that described characters as having evolved but I missed the journey to that. Big plus on the execution, love the sounds, background noises, conversations - makes it feel real and live. Please elaborate on the story with the characters and try move away from some of the predictable conversations/thoughts. Characters are allowed to doubt themselves and develop based on their past and what they are experiencing. Add to that I would be curious about a second one :-)

Zaddy

Hated the narrator’s voice at the beginning, but as the story unfolds, you understand why. A brilliant and very cautionary tale !

A good listen

This is performed almost like a play with sound effects, it makes it really entertaining to listen to. The storyline is good, characters are interesting. It’s short but worth the credit.

Innovative and nostalgic in equal measure.

I really enjoyed this book. I've been a fan of Sarah Ramos since the early 00s, and I've enjoyed her evolution as an actor. I now find myself a fan of her writing.

I loved the radio play style of this audio book, which made it both more immersive.

Sarah and Chris (both great actors) give compelling performances, and Chris manages to convey both charm and spine-chilling creepiness. Sarah's take on inner monologue is both funny and relatable, and entirety on point.

the story was well written, albeit somewhat predictable, but honestly, that didn't bother me. from the moment she came to work to discover her nemesis' fate, it was clear to me what was happening. Same thing when Alex makes a scene, then promptly is taken off the board. but I feel like we, the readers, were supposed to figure it out, and be ahead of the game throughout. we were witnessing the gaslighting, manipulation and rationalisation, we were concerned for her, because we saw what was happening, while she didn't.

!! SPOILER AHEAD !!

Anyone who's ever had a friend, or themselves have been, in an abusive situation, knows that feeling of helplessness because you see what's happening, yet they refuse to see it. and, sometimes, when they finally do, pride, resignation or some form of Stockholm syndrome causes them to stay anyway.

I feel like we witnessed a villain origin story. she convinces herself that she's doing it for the safety of others. but we, the readers, can see that something in her changed once she saw the changes to her face. he'd made her perfect. the aspiration of which was the first thing we ever learned about her.

for a somewhat (and, I believe, intentionally) predictable book, that subtle foreshadowing was great. we predicted what we were meant to, so we would miss what we weren't.

bravo!
