About this listen
The Story of the First American Student of Bjj...and the Martial Arts Revolution He Helped Create!
"My friend, have you ever done any martial arts? My family has been doing Jiu-Jitsu for sixty-five years. We're champions. We're very well known in Brazil. Why don't you come by for a free class?"
I couldn't have imagined it then, but that moment would mark the beginning of the rest of my life...
Richard Bresler was Rorion Gracie's first student in LA, and is widely recognized as the first student of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the US. His memoir, Worth Defending, chronicles his over 40 years' involvement with the Gracie family and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, including the almost 20 years he spent working closely alongside Rorion helping to grow Jiu-Jitsu through the Gracie Garages, the challenge matches, the founding of the Gracie Academy, and the inception of the UFC.
This memoir includes:
- Richard's journey out of depression and substance abuse through the transformative power of the martial arts.
- Richard's experiences training privately with many members of the Gracie family, including Rorion, Rickson, Royce, and Grandmaster Hélio himself.
- Richard's trip to Rio de Janeiro, where he shared the mats with the legendary Rolls Gracie.
- Richard's experience watching from ringside as his friend and teacher, Royce Gracie, won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship.
- The creation of "Krav Ground," the ground-fighting system that Richard helped develop for Krav Maga.
- Richard's experiences with and take on alternative health and dietary practices, including the Gracie diet.
- Richard's take on the current state of BJJ, and where it needs to go moving forward.
- A new foreword by co-author Scott Burr, in which he discusses the timing of the project and the partnership and process that finally made this long-awaited book a reality.

Authentic and insightful into both history and the martial art of Jiu Jitsu and its early days in the USA.
I really enjoyed listening to this as it gave a really interesting first hand account and experiences of a student of the early days of when Gracie Jiu Jitsu came the US and paved the way for the UFC. That is only part of it though as it is a very personal story of one man’s journey and his relationship with the Gracie family, the art and how he battled his personal issues and how the art saved him. There is also much that can be learned from this as he conveys his view of the art and how it should be learned and what it means . Being an older practitioner, I can relate and understand much of what his says and take it on board. I will come back to some of this for a second listen to remind myself of some of the valuable lessons in this book.

Graphically Honest Account
Anyone who is practicing Brazilian Jiu Jistsu and wants to know why? The why is because of Rorion Gracie and to some extent Richard Bresler.
Although I have read and watched many accounts of the early years of BJJ this is by far the most interesting and heartfelt I’ve read. I commend the author for his honesty and I am grateful for Scott Burr’s narration which makes this audible version a pleasure to listen to!
Best wishes
Luke Theo

Very good.
Wasn't expecting too much, as there aren't many reviews, but it's fantastic. Really enjoyed it.
Interesting account of someone who just happened to be in the right place at the right time to watch the birth of Jiu Jitsu in America, and the start of the UFC.
Surprisingly well written too. Well worth a listen.

I’m not a prolific reader , but with this on in the background on my daily commute I was always ready for the next hourly instalment of Richards version of how it all began over in the USA . Some good stories .

Great Book, Well Worth a Listen
Great book, I know when it’s a really good book as I listened to it all the way through within a few days and want to listen to it again... also I got some really good lessons and insights...
Very well narrated, I forgot it wasn’t the author reading the book, the co-author Scott was reading it, he got into the character of the author so well I thought it was the author reading it himself... so well done Scott...
Richards story is really good and honest, he is very open about his struggles with life and how he overcame the challenges he faced, some really good lessons and insights to life in general and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu...
Very honest book, with lots of insights to the journey of the early days of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which was really good, I’ve listened to “Breathe: A Life in Flow” by
Rickson Gracie and both books cover their Journey from the early days, it was great to see how both their journeys entwined... it gave me a good picture of the early days of BJJ... it would be great to hear a book from Rorion Gracie’s point of view of his journey...
Would you like the book if your not into BJJ...? I’m not sure, what I can say is that there are some really good life lessons throughout the whole book and if you like to read about true life journeys with all the challenges overcome then I think you would like the book.
Overall, a really good book, well worth a read or listen...

Highly recommended for anyone in BJJ
I’ve been training BJJ since 2015 and have experienced every pitfall and frustration there is. To hear the same thoughts coming from someone from such a prestigious training pedigree, but who then explains how he navigated through them, has refreshed and reinvigorated my commitment to Jiu jitsu.
