About this listen
Google receives over 1,500,000 unique applications for jobs every year. This book shows you why.
* How to learn from your best employees - and your worst
* Why you should only hire people who are smarter than you are
* Take away managers' powers over employees
* And why not to trust your gut instinct
'We spend more time working than doing anything else in life. It's not right that the experience should be so demotivating and dehumanizing.' So says Laszlo Bock, visionary head of People Operations at the company that transformed how the world interacts with knowledge: this insight is the heart of his brilliant first book.
A compelling manifesto with the potential to change how we work and live, Work Rules! offers both a new philosophy of the new world of work and a blueprint for attracting the most spectacular talent and ensuring the brightest and best prosper. Your workplace and how you treat your employees has a huge effect on your success. In twelve vivid chapters, Bock lays out a series of surprising lessons from a range of industries - from household names to little-known innovators. He also takes us inside one of history's most explosively successful businesses to reveal why Google is consistently rated one of the best places to work in the world. His years of experience are distilled into a series of entertaining principles that are easy to put into action, whether you're a team of one or a team of thousands.
Work Rules! shows how to strike a balance between creativity and structure, leading to success you can measure in quality of life as well as market share. Listen to it to build a better company from within rather than from above; listen to it to reawaken your joy in what you do. The way we work is changing - are you?

Engaging and insightful
What was one of the most memorable moments of Work Rules!?
The elements of the book that cover how independent and active the Googlers are at self organising a better environment for themselves was real food for thought
What about Laszlo Bock’s performance did you like?
Laszlo is funny, smart and engaging throughout. His delivery is lighthearted and allows you to absorb interesting and sometimes complex ideas easily with anecdotes and simple examples

Very interesting insights from inside Google
Applicable practices mostly for people involved with HR but not exclusively. Great appendix chapter. Lots of stories, but some very useful principles in any business spread throughout the book.

Google Ad
Easy to listen to. Maybe more of a lecture to a manager than an employee. After having read it, I still believe Google has a great work culture.

Great companion to...
Great companion peace that s references in the excellent ‘How google works’ (not available on audio format)an almost gospel like version of the same story by an inside prime mover. Writers often narrating their own audio book is often a weak point but not in this case.

Interesting
There was a lot to take from this and it is well told overall. The main issue I found is that it is really aimed at large organisations and often overlooks the SME market.

Insight into Google’s hiring and retention approach
Explains why Google puts do much effort into always hiring only the best, and what it does to retain them and make sure they are happy working there.
Overall message is valuable but doesn’t go into much detail on practices.

Inspired me to ditch my high paid job in Design and pursue a job in People Operations
Beautifully sums up how Google operate from a People Operations perspective distilling some complex data into the fundamental idea that people are essentially good, and we should treat people accordingly.
