About this listen

Amanda Prowse has built a bestselling career on the lives of fictional women. Now she turns the pen on her own life.

I guess the first question to ask is, what kind of woman am I? Well, you know those women who saunter into a room, immaculately coiffed and primped from head to toe?

If you look behind her, you’ll see me.

From her childhood, where there was no blueprint for success, to building a career as a bestselling novelist against all odds, Amanda Prowse explores what it means to be a woman in a world where popularity, slimness, beauty and youth are currency—and how she overcame all of that to forge her own path to happiness.

Sometimes heartbreaking, often hilarious and always entirely relatable, Prowse details her early struggles with self-esteem and how she coped with the frustrating expectations others had of how she should live. Most poignantly, she delves into her toxic relationship with food, the hardest addiction she has ever known, and how she journeyed out the other side.

One of the most candid memoirs you’re ever likely to read, Women Like Us provides welcome insight into how it is possible—against the odds—to overcome insecurity, body consciousness and the ubiquitous imposter syndrome to find happiness and success, from a woman who’s done it all, and then some.

Critic reviews

“Amanda Prowse, a bestselling author, narrates her own look at the unlikely trajectory of her life and career. Prowse's posh British accent and arch confidential tone will appeal to many listeners.… Prowse is a natural narrator. Confident even while she is confiding, she is sure to draw in new fans in addition to the longstanding ones wanting to hear the story behind her stories. She is unflinching in her look back at painful moments—from her first ballet performance to her addiction to food. Listeners will lean in to this title, told as if chatting to a friend.”AudioFile Magazine

“Fans of Prowse’s work will be thrilled to hear the author narrating her personal stories. With a gentle British accent, Prowse speaks to women like herself—not the perfectly coiffed and confident, but women who are self-conscious and sometimes overwhelmed with doubt.… An uplifting and humorous memoir…. Share with fans of Delia Ephron’s Left on Tenth or Kelsey Miller’s Big Girl.”Library Journal (starred review)

“In this immensely inspiring work, British novelist Prowse (What Have I Done?) reflects on the bodily struggles that bled into her successful writing career…Told with clarity and vulnerability, Prowse’s story of overcoming cultural norms to accept herself arrives as a much-needed corrective in an age of filtered beauty.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Interesting

I haven’t read or listened to any of Amanda Prowse’s books, but this memoir intrigued me. Her life has been very interesting, and she has overcome several traumatic events.

The memoir is well written, the narration is ok, but I have to admit I gave up in the last couple of chapters. Her story about her weight gain was fine, I could sympathise entirely with her. However when it came to her methods of weight loss, she lost me as a listener. Evangelical is the best description I can think of, and it wasn’t what I was prepared to continue with. To be honest, it’s the type of thing anyone who has done any sort of dieting has heard over and over. You stop eating certain foods, eat more fruit and veg and you lose weight and feel better. It’s not rocket science… Boring.

Healing begins when we are truthful about who we are. I felt every truth written in this book and appreciate it deeply. 🙏🏼

I chose this book because I am attempting to write memoir and I'm blown away!!!! I haven't read any of Amanda's novels but will do now! The family members she brought to life and the depth of her own honesty will stay with me. I also loved the rhythm of this book and the performance by Amanda was 5 ⭐ Highly recommended to any women out there, you will find yourself within these pages. Thank you Amanda. x

It’s made me cry frequently. I have smiled along with the situations that I have recognised and empathised with and I have loved it all.
I have never heard of Amanda Prowse or read any of her work but I love this woman and hope to emulate her outlook on life.

Not what I expected but a fab, inspiring memoir!

I'd read a couple of Amanda Prowse's novels & enjoyed her storylines about women's lives in different situations which a found relatable & enjoyable. However, I knew nothing about her, her background & how she got to be a globally selling novelist on Kindle & Audible. It's not what I expected which is why it's so good. It's sad & heartbreaking at points but funny, joyful & inspiring too. A superb listen!

Brilliant book!

This will go down as my of my best books, you will laugh and cry.
Beautiful read, I normally just listen to books at night but this one had me listening all day long.
I could relate massively to her struggles with weight.. my own story nearly exactly the same.
Approaching 40 this book has reminded me that I still have time to follow my own dream.
In a time where everyone just shares the best parts it’s a reminder that a perfect life doesn’t equate to someone being remarkable.. in fact the opposite is probably more true… the shit bits.

The author’s dreadful trials and tribulations

Her honesty. Amanda Prouse has been one of my favourite authors for sometime, I have better understanding after listening to this book why her characters are so believable and the stories so captivating. Thank you.

Absolutely wonderful

The lovely Amanda never fails to produce the most fabulous books and this memoir lives up to that. A story of health challenges and so many difficulties which she has triumphed over and is now living her best life. I can so relate to this book and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her more. Well done Amanda. It’s absolutely fantastic.
