About this listen

London, 1944. Two young nurses meet at a train station with a common purpose: to join the war effort. Scarlet longs for the chance to find her missing fiancé, Thomas, and to prove to her family - and to herself - that she's stronger than everybody thinks. Nursing is in Ellie's blood, but her humble background is vastly different from Scarlet's privileged upbringing. Though Ellie puts on a brave face, she's just as nervous as Scarlet about what awaits them in France.

In Normandy, the two friends soon encounter the seemingly unflappable Lucy. Scarlet and Ellie are in awe of her courage and competence, but the experienced nurse is well aware of the dangers of the job they've chosen - and even she is terrified they won't make it home alive.

Pushed to their limits by the brutality of a world at war, Scarlet, Ellie and Lucy will need to rely on each other - and the power of their friendship - to survive.

Narration felt unnatural but a good story

Interesting to hear perspectives of nurses in WWII. Quite hard to get over the slightly odd narration though. Her voice representations were okay, but the parts in between just sounded weird. ‘She said’ especially.

If you can get past that though, the book itself is entertaining.

A romance

This is a very nicely written but predictable story, primarily focused on the romantic lives of the characters. A nice holiday read but shallow.

Average war book

The story line was nothing out of the ordinary but flowed well. The narrator had a deathly boring monotonous voice...it would have been better to have read the book.

Dreadful narrator

The narrator gave no light and shade to anything but the dialogue. Her accents were good though. Because I listen while cross stitching I didn't notice at first so I was engaged in the story lines. I sped up the narration to 1.2% which was marginally better. I'd perhaps advise potential listeners to read this one instead

Really good story, let down by narration

What did you like best about Wives of War? What did you like least?

Interesting story with an excellent, well-thought out plot.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was really boring to listen to and didn't lend any expression to her retelling. Honestly, it did put me off the book.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Yes, absolutely.

Good story but..................

A very good story but I found the narration extremely irritating which took away from the enjoyment. The intonation of some of the words was frustrating and I found myself concentrating on when the next one would come rather than the story itself

the story

I liked this book, but I'm sorry to say not orator, she read it like an essay every punctuation
she made clear, some parts I enjoyed her reading, but on the hole not so much, but the story itself very good.
