About this listen

Spring 1792. A troubled peace with France means that even a frigate captain as famous as Richard Bolitho is forced to swallow his pride and visit the Admiralty daily to plead for a ship.

But, as the clouds of war begin to rise once more over the Channel, all he is offered is command of three topsail cutters. His task is to track down deserters, but the 'Brotherhood' he comes up against are brutal and dangerous.

When a King's ransom is in peril and Bolitho is ordered to proceed 'with all despatch' to recover it, he will need all the loyalty and courage of his three gallant cutters if he is to fulfill his mission.

"Michael Jayston is a delight to the ear. His crisp voice easily moves from narrative to conversation and from character to character without missing a beat." (AudioFile)

No surprises here.

More of the same, really. But the author gets stuck into word choice habits that get to be a bore. Far, far too many "said quietly"s and the overuse of "Old friend" from Bolitho to the faithful lapdog Allday almost takes on a homoerotic element with its degree of regularity.
The English language is blessed with a massive vocabulary. Kent should learn to use his Thesaurus rather more.
Those moans apart, this serves up more or less what is expected in a tall ship naval war novel in a series that eventually outnumbered the lengthy CS Forester-Hornblower similar (by a factor of three). But then Forester knew when to quit, (mostly...)

Could not finish!

I was looking forward to this book, but my enjoyment was completely spoiled because of the actual recording.
From chapter 6 onwards, it skipped to random chapters, once from 5 to 14!
Very disappointi ng indeed - can I get my money back?
