Summary

Investigating your own death can be murder.

Bea Goldfrapp runs her own magical greetings card business in the small town of Magpie Cove, Maine. She lives with her demon familiar, Widdershins, a cat that can change its breed on a daily basis, and a talking magpie that's lived for a thousand years. She likes her life and wouldn't change it for the world.

Then someone poisons her tea and she dies.

Luckily for Bea, her father is a powerful sorcerer, and he brings her back to life, losing his own soul in the process. Bea is understandably miffed that someone wanted to kill her, and decides to find out who did it. This only brings more complications to her life, mainly because she never realised she had so many enemies. Can she find out who killed her before the killer strikes again?

A perfect paranormal cozy mystery for fans of Annabel Chase, K. F. Breene, and Leighan Dobbs.

A five star story with a three star narrator

I listened to the audio version. If I had read it instead of listened, I would have given 5 stars.

The book description had me all kinds of excited! And the story was awesome! I loved Bea, and her compassion. Great story, very entertaining, and many twists and turns. Complicated, layered, and I loved it! I was really entertained and intrigued by it all.

So that was 5 stars for the story. Now the narrator. I had to get used to her way of speaking quite nonchalantly, not really pronunciating the words precisely. Fast, too. But it’s good for me to learn to understand different kinds of dialects (I’m Dutch). But my biggest irritation was: she very regularly stopped mid sentence, confusing me. Often she stopped where there shouldn’t be a pause at all. Examples: “I was too busy drinking my tea… BIG PAUSE …to talk.” “I only hoped I could get to her… BIG PAUSE … in time.” Suspense gone! It was really annoying and distracting (because you’re already starting to think: what does she mean?). It disrupted the flow and any tension. And I’m not exaggerating, it happened constantly. Which was a shame because she was narrating a five star story and she took away from that. She did do the different voices well, that was good.

I am excited to get the next book in this series, but it will be the ebook version this time.

Interesting starter

This was an interesting starting book. There are some novel concepts in the story with some clover twists. I would like to see how the rest of the series continues to play out. Congratulations must also go to the narrator, good job!

And then, she dies!

Winter Solstice Murders: Magpie Cove Cozy Mysteries Book 1
by C.Farren

I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Bea Goldfrapp lives quite happily in the small town of Magpie Cove, an area populated with mostly witches and warlocks, with her two familiars. She runs a magic card shop with her sister, adding her personal magic touch to the cards to brighten someone's day.
And then she dies.
Not by an unfortunate accident or an unforeseen illness, but intentionally.
Someone murders her.
Her father revives her, but it comes at a price. Bea, confused why anyone would want her dead, embarks on a mission to discover who and why. She quickly learns that things aren't always as simple as you think.

This is the first book in the Magpie Cove Cozy Mysteries. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The plot flows smoothly as Bea turns detective, determined to uncover the perpetrator of the crime. C.Farren has created exciting scenarios, twists and turns that build up to a satisfying reveal. I listened to the audio version, narrated by Naomi Rose-Mock, who successfully brings this story to life with the ability to relate the story compellingly, leading to a solid delivery. The emotions were all believable, and I especially liked how the inner thoughts they spoke are in a quieter tone, being shared only with the person listening.
It ends with a thrilling flair; I can't wait to discover what comes next.
