About this listen

When M receives word that a known terrorist organization is planning to infiltrate and destroy a top-secret British Royal Navy aircraft carrier-based summit of world leaders, James Bond is returned to active duty in the Royal Navy. Promoted from Commander to Captain, Bond is expected to infiltrate the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible and identify potential sleeper agents.

As he struggles to complete his mission, a massive war game is being carried out between the American, British, and Soviet Navies. And when Bond gets caught up in a murder investigation the safety of the most powerful leaders on the planet hangs in the balance....

Another great Bond story

I love listening to the continuing story of Bond and John Gardner writes so well. Well done to Simon Vance for his pace and precision with the story.

Steady, nothing more

Steady pace for bond novel but easy to finish. Decent enough spy book but nothing special.

007 Story - but seemed a bit rushed

Definitely a James Bond story , but whole thing seemed a bit rushed.
Could have been better put together

I’m a big fan of the John Gardner/Simon Vance combination, but don’t think this was their best book.

Still a good listen for James Bond fans

simply awful

so many basic holes. a lazy pastiche. cashing in on the series.
thoughtlessly put together . a set of random words would have been better.

Short on plot, long on technical descriptions.

There's far too much technical description of helicopter manoeuvres, why aircraft carriers aren't called aircraft carriers (don't ask me why - I fell asleep).

The plot is slight - war games, world leaders meeting on an aircraft carrier and Bond is responsible for security so he's back in the Navy with the rank of Captain. It feels as though in this 8th Bond novel that Gardner has given up caring and has just stirred together a rather unappetising mixture of stale plot devices, bits of information about the Royal Navy and long chunks of technical specifications. Without the latter, this wouldn't be much more than a slightly long short story.
