About this listen

When Daine comes down from the mountains, she carries with her two things: a dark secret about her own past, and a strangely powerful magic that even she doesn't understand.

Soon Daine has a job working for Onua, the queen's horsemistress, who is astonished at the girl's way with animals. It's almost as if she can speak to them....

Daine and Onua travel to Pirate's Swoop, where Daine finds herself swept into a war that threatens all of Tortall, a war where magic is one of the main weapons.

The wall between the worlds is cracking.

The magical creatures are returning.

Now Daine must master her own magic, and face her own dark memories, if she is to save her new home from destruction.

Editor reviews

In this fantasy we meet another strong, young female character with special powers. Daine is gifted in many ways - she's an excellent archer - but her special talent lies in her ability with animals, who seem to listen to her words. Daine earns a job working for Onua, the queen's horse mistress, who is impressed by the girl's powers. Tamora Pierce leads in narrating this exciting tale, which is lovingly detailed and populated by a cast of almost thirty people (including the writer's husband). Once listeners get used to the story switching from the narrator's voice to those of the actors, they will be pleased at its fanciful magic.

One of my favourite authors

The narration is a little slow - I had to speed it up to make it sound normal, but the characterisation was great and I'm frankly overjoyed to have audiobooks of Tamora Pierce's work!

fun, light fantasy read

This was a brilliantly narrated audiobook. I rarely listen to audiobooks but the full cast version of this kept me entertained and involved in the story, even though I wasn't reading it. It was drama throughout and definitely a fun quick fantasy read.

Dane was a great character and I loved seeing her and her powers develop. Her backstory was powerfully written. I think there was a lack of explanation for some of the plot points and why the immortal beings were brought to the realm. They seemed more trouble than they were worth. It wasn't entirely clear why certain immortals remained and others didn't and why some were inherently evil and others weren't BUT that did not diminish my enjoyment at the time of reading.

Love this series of books

TBH, I only got this book because I lost my paperback version lol
I have all the others including the circle, circle opens, protector of the small, and the lady Knight ones. I've also got a mixture of paper back and audible on the spy and origins ones. From this you know I like the stories. However Tamora God bless her soul is a bit stiff reading this one, the others are getting better as they flow easier.

Meh

I love these books, but was disappointed from the outset by the flat narration. I was extremely surprised to learn that the narrator was the author! There is next to no emotion in any of the narration. However, most of the voice cast is good, and it was nice to hear actual children voicing Kalasin, Roald, and Thom.

For Children

Let me first say that this is not a bad story, and it was beautifully performed. That having been said, this is more suited for children of perhaps eight to fourteen years old. I wasn't able to listen to more than a few hours, as I just couldn't connect to the story or the characters. I hope someone with children to entertain finds this book, and that they enjoy it. I couldn't
