Summary

The ground-breaking thriller from the queen of crime drama and the basis for Steve McQueen's major motion picture. Widows is a fast-paced heist thriller with an all-female cast you won't forget.

Facing life alone, they turned to crime together....

A security van heist goes disastrously wrong, and three women are left widowed.

When Dolly Rawlins discovers her gang boss husband's plans for the failed hijack, an idea starts to form....

Could she and the other wives finish the job their husbands started?

As the women rehearse the raid, it becomes clear that someone else must have been involved.

But only three bodies were found in the wreckage.

Who was the fourth man?

And where is he now?

Widows' Pique

My first by this author, and probably my last. Overly and unnecessarily dramatic with the pathetic brainless tedious continual cross-questioning by the non compatible female "gang" throughout the whole book which made me realize why I usually give books with too many female MCs a definite miss, (unless it's Georgette Heyer).

A good enough tale when you finally make it to the end, but you feel like you've been roughed up like Reznik. IT WAS OK

Unlikely premise

This book was quite entertaining, well performed and a good light hearted listen, but the premise felt a little unlikely, dont think i will be investing into the sequel

No wonder it’s now a film

Another master class of story telling by Lynda La Plante. Very easy listening and will want to move on to book 2 to find out what the widows get up to next.

Good plot twists

Good book to listen to while gardening well read with accents etc. Easy to get into though not gripping like a page turner.

Brilliantly read

Very good story with good characters.
The best narrator I've yet to hear, great pace with believable and consistent portrayals of each character.

Brilliant

This is probably my favourite LaPlante audiobook. Fantastic characters with a well written story and the reading was in keeping with the characters and story.

Engaging from beginning to end

I'm a big Lynda La Plante fan, but was wary of her early work for fear that it wouldn't be as polished or as well developed as her later work. I need not have been so concerned, this is an excellent story and had me fully engaged from beginning to the end.

Annie Aldington proves a great narrator as her London accent captures the setting and voice of the characters being portrayed well. Her voice creates the atmosphere.

I have subsequently watched the 2018 film based on the story, which was a worthwhile watch, but not as good as the book. I have the 1983 television series on order, so am looking forward to seeing that when it arrives.
