About this listen

Actor, writer and hopeless romantic Rebecca Humphries had often been called crazy by her boyfriend. But when paparazzi caught him kissing his Strictly Come Dancing partner, she realised the only crazy thing was believing she didn't deserve more.

Forced into victimhood by the story, Rebecca chose to reclaim her power, posting her thoughts on social media, including advice for other women who might be experiencing what she realised she'd managed to escape: a toxic, oppressive relationship. A flood of support poured in, but amongst the well-wishes was a simple question with an infinitely complex answer: 'if he was so bad, why did you stay?'

Empowering, unflinching and full of humour, this book takes that question and owns it. Using her relationship history, coming-of-age stories and experiences since the Strictly scandal, Rebecca explores why good girls are drawn to darkness, whether pop culture glamourises toxicity, when a relationship 'rough patch' becomes the start of a destructive cycle, if women are conditioned for co-dependency and—ultimately—how to reframe disaster into something magical.

Witty and well written/read important female story

I think this is an important female story of not only subtle female abuse that happens daily to many women but also on how to rediscover one’s voice and to listen to it. I binge listened to this as it kept me intrigued as the chapters went from the pre event to post event. Having watched the strictly shenanigans from 2018, I have always wanted to read or listen to more of Rebecca’s account.

always read an autobio like this by audiobook

The author reads this exactly as she wants to be heard - adding to the enormous value of writing a book like this. Before I'd finished I'd already recommended to so many friends and relatives who would get value from it, and I made sure they got the audiobook format. it made me re-evaluate so many friendships and relationships in my life. and Rebecca did it all with such grace. I hate cancel culture, ppl are flawed - but it's time for us all to be led by the people experiencing this shit and not by the daily fail and other gutter dredging tabloids! bravo bravo bravo. so good.

Very good

Knew nothing about the backstory as I have 0 interest in celebrities but this was a very well written account of a young woman taking back control of her life in the aftermath of a toxic relationship which ended in the full glare of the media. Excellent narration by author.

I loved this book! The author reading it herself gave the audio something extra and she was absolutely brilliant doing it! An important read, and presented in such a way that you can’t wait to continue listening. Thank you Rebecca!

A Brave Honest Account.

A brave and honest account of the darker side of romance.
yes I have often wondered when watching Strictly. I love the programme by the way. However, do the dancing couples have to stand so close hugging kissing and looking adoringly into one another's eyes when they are not actually performing? Whilst wives partners, and family etc have to stand by probably feeling embarrassed, or humiliated. Think they would do anything to win that danm trophy 🏆

Relatable

Sadly relatable. I’m sure most women will be able to name men like this, in their own lives. A good listen. Remember, you don’t need to collect ‘red flags’, one is enough !
