Summary
Doctor Who Screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch's superbly entertaining supernatural crime series has, with its witty one-liners and wonderfully erudite take on London, won a legion of fans in double quick time.
Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it's just as well - he's already had run-ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the Police Force is less easy. Especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at. And then there's his love life. The last person he fell for ended up seriously dead. It wasn't his fault, but still.
Now something horrible is happening in the labyrinth of tunnels that make up the tube system that honeycombs the ancient foundations of London. And delays on the Northern line is the very least of it. Time to call in the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit 9, aka 'The Folly'. Time to call in PC Peter Grant, Britain's Last Wizard.
Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Editor reviews
Whispers Under Ground, book 3 in the best-selling PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch and narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, is a laugh-out-loud modern mystery crime detective audiobook, complete and unabridged. London is not as it seems - with evil gods and goddesses of the Thames, dark magic lurking in the tube system and monsters hiding in the shadows, it is up to wizard and PC Peter Grant to maintain order. PC Grant must use his cunning detective skills to track down a killer in Soho. But it’s a dangerous task when there’s no one to call for backup. Available now from Audible.

Great
This series gets better and better. Love the premise, love the wry humour, love the delivery. Love the way it brings London alive, not in the touristy sense, but the real, I live here and I know about its' nooks and crannies sense. I do hope it can keep going.

Un-put-downable- write more books please!
What did you like most about Whispers Under Ground?
I loved the unexpected twists and turns of the plot, through (and under) the history of London. I loved the smells and squelches, the lights and shadows, the noises and echoes and the wonderful fitting voices of the reader.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Whispers Under Ground?
Meeting the quiet people, their whispering and need to touch.
What about Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s performance did you like?
I really appreciate the difference in characters and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's ability to slide so easily from character to character. There was never any confusion with who was speaking, yet done so un-noticeably that it never interrupted the joy of listening.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A rollicking passage to a parallel world
Any additional comments?
This book has a cool humour and an energy that suits London down to (and underneath) the ground. The book (and the series) capture the nonchalance and understated character of modern, intelligent, multicultural England.
