About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer's disease? Is there such a thing as a 'cancer personality'?

Drawing on deep scientific research and Dr Gabor Maté's acclaimed clinical work, When the Body Says No provides the answers to critical questions about the mind-body link - and the role that stress and our emotional makeup play in an array of common diseases.

When the Body Says No

  • Explores the role of the mind-body link in conditions and diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
  • Shares dozens of enlightening case studies and stories, including those of people such as Lou Gehrig (ALS), Betty Ford (breast cancer), Ronald Reagan (Alzheimer's), Gilda Radner (ovarian cancer) and Lance Armstrong (testicular cancer).
  • Reveals 'The Seven A's of Healing': principles in healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress.

A very good read for insight into stress and chronic illness

I reached for this book whilst struggling with chronic fatigue (CFS), although there is not much written on this condition there is lots of useful information and insight into how stress, childhood, emotions, environment etc can lead to the manifestation of chronic illnesses.
I resonated a lot with the patients stories and it made me think deeper about what may be the causes of my illness and what I may do help my healing.

Groundbreaking

I had recently finished the brilliant The Body Keeps the Score, so I didn't really want to read this; it was my friend's recommendation. But I am truly blown away by the lessons that I have learnt reading this. There are so many interesting talking points about life and how we live it. I've just purchased the paper copy so that I can revisit key points. You can enjoy this book if you are happy, or going through a tough time. It's for everyone.

An essential book for our time

Essential read for every person young and old. We will find ourselves, our friends and our family members in the patients’ stories as our society is full of stress and unresolved emotional issues. This book is gold.

Introspective

Very introspective book. You will most probably learn a thing or two about yourself. A thing or two that you always felt but never knew. I enjoy works that forxe me to think and this book made ne think about myself and I like to think I grew as a person a little bit from reading it. For me that is enough to recommend it to others

Great book, but genetics are still important

I thoroughly enjoyed this book & would recommend people with chronic pain conditions etc to read, as it's very informative. As a MH professional myself I agree with the principle that the mind & body are 1 & there is an interplay & our environment & mental state has a massive impact on our physical health. I think the 7 A's of healing were helpful & wish there was more on this in the book, as practical guidance. That said, I think genetics has a bigger role to play than the author suggests. We shouldn't downplay the psychosocial or the bio roles in the biopsychosocial model of health. Genetics has come a long way & is actually much more exciting than the book predicted it to be. Environment, upbringing, emotions, personality along with genetics, physical conditions, etc all interplay. I do think it's a powerful & informative book, so definitely give it a listen.
