Should come with a warning!

Due to the blurb there was no way of knowing this book is about child abuse. Though overall it was a good book I'd never have got it had I realised the content. It's quite harrowing in parts.

Sloooowwwwwww

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book. Any promise it had fizzled out during the middle and completely died somewhere near the end. Poor story with no actual purpose.

Has When She Was Bad put you off other books in this genre?

I think I need a change now because I'm finding almost everything predictable.

Was When She Was Bad worth the listening time?

No.

Great narrator

This is two stories running alongside each other. A serious child abuse case in America, by far the better story, referencing cultural sexism and a strong woman's professional experience. The second in a very outdated office full of stereotyped people, written in a carry on style and even including outward bound awayday trip that no one goes in now, nit since the 1980's. Obviously one of the characters will be one of the abused children but which one ? The narrator was excellent and carried this rather stretched story making it a creditable listen, but I did find the office scenes silly and I'm not sure the timeline works either.

The boss from hell

I do not work in an office but I have and were I to be working for this monster then I would have left (sensible) or contemplated murder (not sensible but effective). An assortment of characters, well narrated as always by Avita, but oh how very dim they proved to be. Gang up on the bitch and send her packing or threaten to leave en block - but of course, that would have spoiled the story but been so much more believable. So, although I did enjoy the romp, I found the novel unrealistic, which proved to be a huge spoiler.

Wow, a deep, disturbing novel.

This book has opened my eyes, more to the frailty of humans and how we can succumb to the most awful things.
It is well paced and keeps you right in the middle of the action. Having only had a brief experience of office life it shows how an individual can become so wrapped up in office politics, they lose sight of what's really important.
There has to be a follow up because it ends on a cliffhanger.
Loved it.

Strange Modus Operandi

I was thoroughly enjoying this psychological thriller until the point where the actual murder is revealed. For me, the method seems so far fetched that I had to 'google' it to see if it was possible. Lo & behold it actually happened to someone in real life, so I stand corrected! Nevertheless I think the author could have chosen a method that was better related to the murderer's personality & past. It was almost as though the author had read about a death & thought oh I'm going to use that one in my next book ! I could relate to the various interesting characters & there were a couple of twists in the plot, so on the whole it was a fairly enjoyable read.
