About this listen

Caught in the hook of love, a young woman marries a dashing university professor. She moves to a rain-washed coastal town to be with him, but behind closed doors she discovers that her perfect husband is a perfect monster. As he sets about battering her into obedience, and as her family pressures her to stay in the marriage, she swears to fight back - a resistance that will either kill her or set her free.

The writing and delivery of it convey with a type of poetry how strong a woman has to be to withstand the physical and mental effects of being married to an abuser. It’s outstanding

Absolutely vital

Well put together and narrated. Read with the book group and many found it was repetitive. Main reason it didnt score hugher for me was I wasnt drawn to it. That great feeling when you cant wait to read/listen to the next bit but we had a really good discussion about it

Tugh read but thought provoking

This should be on the reading lists of all book groups, writing groups and school study lists. Its powerful, honest and incredibly harrowing but told from a position of strength. The protagonist never loses her beautiful way with words, even in the darkest times.

Powerful, evocative and beautiful.

there was never a second where I wasn’t enthralled.. how a woman can write so beautifully about something so horrible escapes me , every single word is emotive and empowering… I unwittingly learned so much ..I wish I had more words ..

Emotive, concerning, eye opening !

I wasn’t sure if I would stick with the book but became invested in wanting to see how/if the storyteller survived.
Great writing, some dark moments but very believable
