Summary
The average human has 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day—up to 41.6 thoughts a minute. That makes the brain an incredibly busy organ!
The National Science Foundation estimates that 80 percent of daily thoughts are negative, and of these, 95 percent are repetitive. It’s no wonder so many of us are stuck in a cycle of negativity and rumination.
For some, these negative thoughts can lead to additional stress and perhaps feelings of frustration with day-to-day life.
For others, the vicious cycle leads to anxiety, depression, and even chronic health conditions that impact physical health. As much as you want to turn to healthy coping methods, it’s easier to fall into unhealthy habits like obsessive or addictive behavior. The cycle continues as mental health only suffers more.
Therapy seems like the only solution, but where do you start? Can you afford it? And do you really want to be opening up to a complete stranger?
While it's true that in some cases, therapy with a professional is the best solution, however, thanks to the gaining popularity of cognitive behavioral therapy, you can get a better understanding of and take control over your mental health.
In this guide to CBT, you will discover:
- What CBT consists of and the wide range of health problems it can treat
- How the thought process works, and the intricate relationship between emotions and behaviors
- 16 cognitive distortions and how they can add to negative thought patterns
- The challenges that come about from automatic negative thoughts, rumination, and the negativity bias
- A free worksheet to track negative thoughts and nine simple steps to reframe them
- The dangers of stress and how this can quickly escalate into bigger problems
- 13 techniques to manage stress, anxiety, and depression
- 20 journal prompts to help you start processing thoughts and emotions

Great book
Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT helps us retrain our brains from the negative to the positive. It helps us to slow down our thinking and be able to see the negative thoughts that are keeping us down and be able to state those ideas differently, to see things differently. Learning why we think the way we think and changing it is possible.
This audio explains the other theories DBT, ACT, ECT, ERP. The author explains distorted and dysfunctional thinking, secondary and primary feelings. There are many real world examples in this of negative thinking distorted, thinking that apply. Feelings trigger thoughts which trigger behaviors and action.
Automatic negative thoughts and rumination are explained along with Negativity bias with examples of how to challenge them. Stress and depression, Panic attacks and obsessive disorders are also talked about with many exercises to get through it. Many self-care examples are talked about.
Chronic pain is even discussed with ways to rewire your brain and thinking with CBT to get through it.

Very insightful
CBT has been around for a long time but it is gaining popularity and when my daughter's therapist suggested we start trying to use CBT skills to help her. She gave me some basic information but I wanted to learn more. CBT is a way to help redirect your thoughts. My daughter struggles with her thoughts as things do not come naturally for her so learning how to naturally redirect her thoughts was important because it was important to both of us that we don't just take a medicinal approach but instead learn more life long skills to help her out. Chapter 4 reviews stress escalations and gives practical techniques to manage stress, anxiety and depression. Truly understanding CBT has been very helpful and because we both have now listened to the book, I can help her make sure she uses the strategies.
What's nice is the exercises don't take long (5-10min daily) is helpful. My daughter has ADHD so trying to keep her attention long is very difficult. The author gives you plenty of information as well as tools to help make sure you can be successful.
