About this listen

The hilarious and controversial host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest, most opinionated, and most necessary book ever—a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.

Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

The book was inspired by the “editorial” Bill delivers at the end of each episode of Real Time. These editorials are direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics, and what’s happening in the world. To put this book together, Maher reviewed more than a decade of his editorials, rewriting, reimagining, and updating them, and adding new material to speak exactly to the moment we’re in. Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health—Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.

Brilliant…. Simply brilliant

Excellent listen. Bill is a fantastic communicator who knows how to pique your interest without being judgmental. As a Brit, I rely on him to give me a measured view of USA… warts and all

Best of Bill Maher

Funny, Witty and the only central voice out there that says at it is! Timeless commentary of society and politics.

excellent satire, cuttingly sharp witted and inciteful.

Couldn't wait to read/listen to this, from Bill's first plug of his own book on Real-time! Lead to forgetting I was on plane; in a packed cafe and on a train; while genuinely laughing out loud wearing headphones. The format was quite unique for a book, yet very much has a 'podcast' feel to the chapters. As a British woman, I find it refreshing to have the opportunity to hear from a balanced liberal who understands the importance of listening to differing sociopolitical points of view, with heavy doses of sarcasm and quick wit.

He’s got soooo many good points

It was a great listen!
He (and his writing team from the show) make a lot of thought provoking points about all issues, big or small.

Clever and funny and a bit much

Huge fan of Bill. I did find it a bit tough to get through in multiple sittings as the onslaught of sarcasm on youths, maga heads, married folks and other less than complete human beings become a bit too dark if taken in too large measures. Still a huge fan of Bill though and there was a chuckle here and there

An Educational Listen.

As a Brit, I have enjoyed Maher’s New Rule segments a great deal. We all need to take a break from politics and this book reaffirms that.

The perfect mix of humor and intellect

As a Dane with an interest in international politics, especially US politics, it’s always nice to feel confirmed in our current state. However it’s certainly also concerning on a higher level, that the guardian of the western world seems increasingly more unstable, decade after decade, perhaps even year after year. Bill is a poetic analyst, with a magnificent sense of humor. He also holds a large bank of good ideas on the issues.
I fully recommend this book.

Reality and Humour.

A great combination of commentary on modern society mixed with first class comedy. A modern day George Carlin!

Hilarious, candid, timely

This book is Maher at his best. As a long-term viewer of Real Time, I consider Maher one of the most significant voices in American culture at the moment & one of the most important champions of the free circulation of ideas. I do not agree with him on everything but he always makes his case powerfully and memorably. What is so good about this book is that he holds the MAGA cult to the fire constantly, never forgetting that they pose more of an existential threat to democracy than the Democrats and the far-Left.

Bill always makes me think

Which is why I like him. Bill challenges what I believe and makes me question what I’ve been told to think. I wish he were running for president.
