Summary

Eleanor and her mother Marjorie have always had a difficult relationship and although they’ve tried, they have somehow just failed to connect.
Now Marjorie has Alzheimer’s, and as her memory fades, her grip on what she has kept hidden begins to loosen. When she calls her daughter to say, ‘There’s something I have to tell you’, Eleanor hopes this will be the moment she learns the truth about the terrible secret that has cast a shadow over both their lives.
But Marjorie’s memory is failing fast and she can’t recall what she wanted to say. Eleanor knows time is running out, and as she tries to gently uncover the truth before it becomes lost inside her mother’s mind forever, she begins to discover what really happened when she was a child – and why…
A story of family and secrets, perfect for fans of Maggie O'Farrell.

Might have been better without this narrator

This story was OK. It had some twists and turns. The characters weren't particularly likeable. The ending was clever and the book did draw you in as time went by. It was thought provoking, particularly in some of its themes. I, however, very nearly stopped listening and returned it then and there; something I never normally do. This was because I thought I couldn't listen to a second more of the narrator who I personally thought was poorly picked for this book. I felt the voice should have been younger and was really awful for Eleanor and especially awful for the young males of the book. For me, it was just annoying! I think that put me off a lot. Perhaps if I had read it myself, I would have liked it more. Because I stuck with it, I did get used to the voice eventually and wasn't so hard on it and perhaps some people would not be so bothered by it but for me it spoiled the book.

What she lost

Interesting but easily explained. Not one I would read again. Ok for a leisurely read.

One of the best books I have listened to

An intriguing story, very well narrated, with a sensitive touch to dementia and the traumas of a normal family. Very enjoyable- I will be looking for more books by this author.
