‘Empowering’ GLAMOUR

Three women, five centuries, one spellbinding story

In the present day, Kate flees a traumatic relationship to the Cumbrian cottage she inherited from her great-aunt; but the cottage hides secrets of its own.

In 1942, Violet rebels against her father’s ideas of a ‘proper young lady’ … until he takes matters into his own hands.

In 1619, Altha is on trial for witchcraft, implicated in the gruesome death of a local man.

Three women they tried to cage – but Weyward women belong to the wild. And they cannot be tamed…

Weyward was a Times bestseller w/e 18-02-2023.

Loved the characters, warmly drawn and individual. It did feel a little bleak that there was only really 1 male character who wasn’t monstrous. The voices were well done but I did find it very odd that a book so clearly set in Cumbria with a real sense of place made no effort to get the accents right. Alva was voiced by a Geordie and none of the other accents were even from the north west. The north is not all one place!!

A strong tale of female empowerment, with gripping and satisfying revelations throughout though.

Enticing story of the persecution and endurance of women across time

I absolutely love this book. I heard of it on BBC4’s Between The Covers, and spent an Audible credit on it immediately.
The writing is beautiful, so evocative that one can see everything described as if one is there.
The victorious strength of the women will delight anyone who has managed to escape from things such as they experience.
The relational thread that binds families through centuries and generations is so real, so strong. So powerfully described.
I hope it is not long before Emilia Hart writes again.

In my opinion, the only thing that was less than perfect was the reading of whoever spoke for Kate. She has a lovely voice, but read too breathily, with too much swallowing to make listening to her as delightful as the other 2 voices.

I will definitely be listening to this remarkable story again.
