About this listen

Teenagers are a breed of their own. They speak their own language, they abide by their own rules, and they seem to exist to drive adults crazy. But adolescence is a typical stage of human development that is the essential preparation for success in the adult world. The more you understand about your teen’s brain, the better prepared you will be to handle this turbulent time in your child’s life.

Professor Abigail Baird has devoted the majority of her career to studying adolescence, and in this Audible Original, she shares the latest perspectives on this amazing time of cognitive and behavioral growth. The 10 lectures in this series will reveal that adolescent behavior is much easier to understand than most people think. Rather than seeing the teen years as a crucible to be endured by parents and young people alike, this series offers a practical perspective for adults who hope to help teens truly thrive in their personal journeys to adulthood - not merely to survive their adolescence.

Whether you are a parent, someone who works with teens, or even a teen yourself, this course will shed new light on a period of human development that is all too often incorrectly described as a time where psychological peril is inevitable.

WOW - Thank you 😊

Abigail Baird is very easy to listen to and she has a brilliant way of talking about teenagers. I love audio books and this has taught, reminded and reassured me so much. I'm going to be much more relaxed when helping my teen.

Great science, few tools

The book is full of scientific and social explanations of a teen's brain and life. It nicely explains the psychology and the developing 'gas and brakes' of a teen's brain, but leaves it to the reader to put the science to use in real-life scenarios. The last chapters have some description of what a good parent-teen relationship looks like. It isn't prescriptive, which is great, but sometimes lacks the 'so what' too. Overall, entertaining (in a nerdy way) and worth reading.

Very informative and easy to listen to!

I've been struggling to understand my teen son but this book really helped me! It's broken down into easy chunks and topics and the narrator is superb and engaging. I can't recommend this book enough, it's given me loads to go away with and put to practice (and also just to understand what's happening to my boy).

Decent content hidden amongst the analogies

Too many analogies. I have heard that neurotypical people find analogies to be really helpful so I assume that most people won't have a problem with this. I however have to work really hard to figure out what on earth neural network patterns in response to various chemical changes has to do with directors or libraries or whatever else is mentioned here.
One minute she is making perfect sense, talking about the course content, and the next she has introduced some totally unrelated topic out of nowhere. Most people use analogies from time to time but this lecturer relies so heavily on them that this is almost unlistenable for me.
