No death could have been more welcome than Evan Morgan's, or more fitting for the Welcome Home celebrations in the village of Llanddewi.
For Morgan had spent the war making money and enemies down in the Vale of Glamorgan with about equal facility. In fact, on the night, it seemed as if a whole posse of murderers had beaten a path to the door of the Manor House.
It is left to the ingenuity of Sir Richard Cherrington, an eminent but slightly eccentric archaeologist with a penchant for amateur detection on a visit from Cambridge, to solve this intricate puzzle of motives and alibis.

Excellent
It’s so sad there are only two Cherringtons by Glyn Daniel. I first read them when they were initially published in paperback and it’s good to find them again. Brilliantly narrated by Peter Wickham - probably my favourite narrator and always excellent.

Overall enjoyable
The quality was variable. I would recommend this book to people who like an old fashioned crime story where the timing of phone calls, timetables, railway journeys etc are vital to the breaking or otherwise of alibis and are gone into in detail.

A new "period" sleuth
Would you consider the audio edition of Welcome Death to be better than the print version?
Well read, gripping, atmospheric - as good as a book - probably.
What did you like best about this story?
Good post-WW2 setting. Believable central character (straight from "The Cambridge Murders").
Lots of red-herrings and a long run-in to the murder.
Which character – as performed by Peter Wickham – was your favourite?
None stands out - good variation of tone and accent added to this Welshman's enjoyment greatly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Certainly a book that my wife returned to at the soonest opportunity - couldn't wait to see whether we had guessed the killer from a long short-list!

Very good Golden Age detective story.
The second of Glyn Daniel's detective novels is every bit as good as the first. A clear storyline and well-defined characters. The hero, like Daniel himself, is a professor of archaeology, but more in the line of the dashing Sir Mortimer Wheeler.

If Dennis Wheatley did detectives
Tricky keeping a grip on all the characters however detailed period yarn. Great (obnoxious) main character, shame there were only two books written. Spent quite a time trying to guess how to spell all the Welsh words.

Too many cooks
The plot was well set with almost the whole community having a good reason for murdering the victim. All the lies and misdirection left me feeling confused. I wanted to know who did it and why. I did warm slightly more to the professor.
The narrator is good and I hope for a better story in the next book.
