Summary

Your best friend killed a man.

Now she needs your help

But can you really trust her motives?

Emily is on holiday with her best friend, Kristen, in the stunning mountains of Chile. They're having the time of their lives until, on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find it covered in blood.

Kristen claims a backpacker attacked her. She shouted, but no-one heard. She struggled, but he was too strong.

She had no option but to kill him.

With no evidence of the assault, Emily must help her hide the body....

Back home, Emily tries to forget what happened, but a surprise visit from Kristen forces her to confront the events of that night.

As the walls close in on their cover-up, Emily asks herself: can she really trust her closest friend?

Not great

Found the narrator v hard to listen to. Especially her pronunciation of Chile. Didn’t really enjoy the story either.

Is it too long or the ending too fast?

Generally a good concept, with some good twists and turns. Feel like the story runs 10 hours and then unfolds in an hour which felt a bit fast or too long, either or 😂
The language is unusual with some almost unbelievable metaphors and at times repetitive.
Generally an easy listen, good storyline and leaves you with questions in a satisfying way.

Surprisingly good

My initial thoughts were that this book was a bit “young” and silly..but as the book developed, the characters developed and it wound up being quite a good story...right up to the end

Irritating voice

The story is enjoyable but it takes a while to get going. The characters are pretentious and unlikeable but that's probably just me and my opinions about traveller stereotypes. Unfortunately I found it hard to listen to as the narrators voice made the characters even more unlikeable and I couldn't listen to her say 'chile' or 'cambodia' one more time. I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if read in a book.

So gripping!

Started a bit slow but once I got into it I could not stop listening. The writing is superb and I felt like I was there in all the places and emotions described. The story was great, and kept me guessing throughout. I loved it and the narration was very good, perfect actually. I’ve spent 6 hours of my Saturday listening to it to finish it! Might be my favourite audiobook of 2021 so far. This is a reese Witherspoon book club book which is why I chose it as she recommended on Instagram and I can totally see this being made into a tv show, it feels along the same lines as big little lies in its tone. Highly recommend!

Interesting concept. Overlong.

Interesting concept.
As someone who travelled extensively as a 20-something, this book really appealed to me and I was gripped for the first hour or so of listening. However, there was endless repetition of key phrases and details, as if the author doubts the memory and retention skills of her audience. Probably ideal for listening to on a sun lounger. If you nod off tor twenty minutes you won’t miss much and you’ll be reminded over and over of the key plot points.
