About this listen
In this hard-rocking, spine-tingling supernatural thriller, the washed-up guitarist of a '90s heavy metal band embarks on an epic road trip across America and deep into the web of a sinister conspiracy.
Grady Hendrix, horror writer and author of Paperbacks from Hell and My Best Friend's Exorcism, is back with his most electrifying novel yet. In the 1990s, heavy metal band Durt Wurk was poised for breakout success - but then lead singer Terry Hunt embarked on a solo career and rocketed to stardom as Koffin, leaving his fellow bandmates to rot in obscurity.
Two decades later, former guitarist Kris Pulaski works as the night manager of a Best Western - she's tired, broke, and unhappy. Everything changes when a shocking act of violence turns her life upside down, and she begins to suspect that Terry sabotaged more than just the band.
Kris hits the road, hoping to reunite with the rest of her bandmates and confront the man who ruined her life. It's a journey that will take her from the Pennsylvania rust belt to a celebrity rehab center to a music festival from hell. A furious power ballad about never giving up, even in the face of overwhelming odds, We Sold Our Souls is an epic journey into the heart of a conspiracy-crazed, pill-popping, paranoid country that seems to have lost its very soul...where only a lone girl with a guitar can save us all.

Epic
This story is epic. Nice plot, even if nothing new, and good characters. Most of all, it brought back so many memories starting with the chapter titles recalling specific albums that I used to listen to. Loved the journey and the authenticity of the approach. Mostly for metal heads, I would say.

interesting story
Worth sticking with through a slow start for the plot and it's description of metal like it used to be!

A fast ride through rock and roll
It’s the 90’s and heavy metal band Durt Wurk are on the edge of their breakthrough until lead singer Terry becomes Koffin, a solo artist with no need for his fellow bandmates.
Two decades later, former guitarist Kris is tired, broke and miserable but a sudden violent event changes everything and she realises Terry may have done more damage than she realised, may have sacrificed them for more than they realised. She sets out to find her old bandmates and face Terry.
This is a journey into paranoia, destruction, death, drugs and rock and roll. Can Kris save all of us from what Terry is bringing into the world, who can she trust, who will die before she can find out what happened that long night 20yrs ago.
This was a fun rollercoaster of a read, I loved the press notices, snippets of interviews and adverts at the end of each chapter. The chapter headings are song titles, Grady really gives an immersive experience in his books. The dialogue is sharp and sarcastic, it gives a real feel of what it was to be a rockstar in the 90’s, in all its gruesome detail.
You’ll look at a UPS drivers differently after this and you will definitely double check that contract you’ve been asked to sign. This was a fast ride through madness and obsession.

decent but not heavy supernatural
Good story interesting takes but honestly a little disappointed with the lack of supernatural influence in the story. I felt it was more a sideline thing than anything else.

Superb
I'm a big fan of Grady Hendrix's work, and this is hands down his best work to date. Hugely entertaining, brilliantly written and scary in all the right places. a love letter to both metal and horror but also with a lot of heart. Carol Monday does a sterling job of narrating this tale that will stick with you long after you've read it, and will also make you think twice before you sign anything again. 😉

a lot of heavy metal, little horror
I've always wanted to read books from this author as reviews say how scary some of the stories are but I don't think they are. I love heavy metal and loved all the references but wanted a little more scare. The story was good and different from anything I've read before. For me it just lacked the scare factor but maybe I'm looking at the wrong books for that
