About this listen
Just look at what happens when people are touched by Jesus: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life. In other words, to be touched by God is to be restored. To become all God meant you to be. That is what Christianity is supposed to do for you; make you whole, set you free, bring you fully alive.
But Jesus also warned that the path to that life is narrow, and few people would find it. You'll notice few have. Waking the Dead will help you find that life, see the fierce battle over your heart, and embrace all that God has for you.
There is so much more. Do you want it?

Recovering a heart that has become fragmented
I have just finished listening to 'Waking the Dead' - having already worked through John Eldredge's earlier books: 'The Sacred Romance', 'The Journey of Desire' & 'Wild at Heart'. Each has its merits and there is something to be gained in working through them all. My personal route began with the abridged version of Wild at Heart - that gripped me & I came back for more.
In this work, as ever, Eldredge is after your heart because God is after your heart. It is only from a whole heart that we can live a whole life.
As an expression of reflections from Eldgredge's own spiritual journey Waking the Dead builds on earlier themes in order to paint a picture firstly of a fragmented heart and secondly of how that heart can move towards wholeness through the integration of the 'four streams' of discipleship, counselling, healing & spiritual warfare.
In an early chapter Eldredge highlights the fact that propositional truth has become the currency of meaning in a predominantly modern world but explains that such truth fails to work as an effective vehicle for what is really meaningful in our lives. It is 'mythic truth' rather than propositional truth that connects with the heart of who we really are and what we are really for. In keeping with this idea the book draws effectively from film and literature in order to tap into the collective narrative of human existence, purpose and relationships. All the time Eldredge is looking for a story to awaken the sleeping heart that tells The Story of who God created you to be.
In the closing sections Eldredge outlines the role to be played by 'Fellowships of the Heart'. These are an expression of Christian community that facilitate the integrating of the four streams in our own lives. There are plenty of times when we need others to listen to our heart, battle on our behalf, help us toward healing and most importantly - tell us our story.
